AUDI A2 thoughts?

First post on here, although I have been a daily viewer of Readers Cars and pistonheads, would ideally like an A5, which insurance wise in my early 20's is a non starter (pun)
Just want to know fellow forumers views and opinions on the Audi A2, i have been rendering up on how it was 'ahead of it's time' and have had a drive in a 2004 model a few months back
As i currently drive a 2005 polo i felt the A2 was a far superior car, in terms of build quality etc, all input appreciated

We've had a 2001SE 1.4Tdi for over 5 years now.
Apart from routine servicing, it's needed 2 front springs and top mounts.
Drives great, looks good, and costs peanuts to run.
The ride is a little harsh, roadholding is good, economy is superb and performance is adequate.
They seem to hold their value quite well, and parts prices are not too bad.

Got a soft spot for these. GF hates them mind, but damn if you wanted a nice, economical, easy to use car for a DD then surely one of these has to be on the list? I believe they are sub 1000kg weight... a lot lighter than most cars and acceleration is where you use the most fuel. Less mass to accelerate, less fuel used.

GF looked at the few of these a while ago but the through was they were very expensive for a good one compared to other cars on the market.
More of a family car as well so would not recommend getting one just to have the Audi Badge.
GF dad brought one a while ago.. Had to sit in the back of it for 15 minutes... not something i ever want to do again. Rock hard

What's not to like? They're light, cleverly packaged to create a surprising amount of space, will do great mpg, the diesels are cheap to tax, the running costs are reasonable and residuals are rock solid. Leather, panoramic roof, Bose, etc were options too - unusual even today on cars in that sector.
We ran one on fleet for about 4 yrs - 1.6Fsi sport, had Audi individual paint ( a sort of cranberry metallic ) and full cream leather so it looked the business. It went pretty well and the handling was decent enough. Apart from routine servicing and tyres it's reliability was faultless. Tyres were a bit of a pain as it did seem susceptible to punctures on the 17" rims, and you only got a can of sealant which was a little hit and miss. Other than that it was a great little car that was missed when it went.
My only slight gripe about the way it drove was that at motorway speeds if you opened the window the buffeting was awful.
Also looking at the retained values on these if you find a good one they seem to be holding up very well indeed so they seem to make financial sense as well so long as they have been looked after - although home servicing is a bit of a no no IIRC.

Audi are bringing these back, felt they were ahead of their time when they were first launched and back in the day they were made out of a lot of Aluminium so V Expensive to make Audi won't be making the same mistake the second time round.
Quite. I haven't checked the details but no doubt the new A2 will be a run of the mill hatchback based on an existing VAG chassis, much like the A1.agent006 said:
If you're expecting cheap insurance for an A2 then you could be in for a surprise. Aluminium costs a lot to repair so premiums are high. Mine was £450+ at 27 in a very safe postcode.
i've been quoted £450 in a low crime area parked in secure drive, which is only around 70 quid more than my polo, I have heard of A2's being written off by insurers just for damage to front wings and bumpersGassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
