Rover 25 diesel Sleeper lol

Having been made redundant for over a year and having a pretty tough time I finally landed my perfect job, one of the upsides is my office, located on the Top Gear test track, the slight downside was the hour commute to get there.

Working out i'd be doing 25000 miles to get their and back in a year i decided that what i needed was a cheap car that i can run into the ground, would do 50mpg and wouldn't really depreciate much as it wouldn't be worth anything to start with.

I started hunting for suitable cars and not wanting to travel half the length of the country to buy a £1000 shed i set my search to local cars.

I tried convincing myself a small petrol clio,206 would be good and i would probably have gone for one if i could have found one that wasn't a complete bag of nuts.

Then this came up and hear me out on this one, I never thought i'd ever be driving a Rover, the nearest i got was the engine in my Chimaera, but hey ho, how bad can it actually be ha ha.

Why did i call it a sleeper.

Well the car has done 66000 miles, with history (ish) to prove, it's bright red (not getting any better is it) has two renault wheel trims and two Rover ones, but it was a diesel so would fulfill the criteria i had set myself.

I turn up to the dealer to pick it up this morning and the guy says "yeah it goes really well, reckon it's been chipped or somefing"

He wasn't joking, the previous owner left it looking like a povety spec Rover 25 but went to the trouble of fitting SDI injectors and having it remapped to I guess somewhere between 130 and 150 bhp and 240ish torque.

I couldn't stop laughing on the way home it really does go like stink, the mid gear accerleration is just daft for a crappy looking car, in fact it goes as well as the Golf 170 diesel I had as an old company smoker.

Does it qualify for being a sleeper, well so long as it proves reliable it's certainly going to be a hoot on the hour journey to work.

I had a rover 220sdi snotter which I think was about 115bhp. Not bad little motors but the small tank was a real pain in the ass. Can you still get parts readily? I needed a boost pipe for mine and was a pain to find one.

Interesting comment on the small tank size, i filled up tonight and although it was just over the red mark on the guage it didn't get much past £50 in the tank.

Hoping a tank will do my weekly runs of 470 miles

The tank must be the same size as my yaris which is good for 400 plus miles u so should be no probs for you.

Super clean! I had a 214 for a few weeks (was given it, then sold it on) but I really like them - great driving feel for a cheap hatch, and they look alright.

Get some cheap MG straights on it and a ZR rear lip spoiler and it will look a hell of a lot nicer. These really were smart looking cars in their day, IMO. Good purchase! Are you going to rolling road it and find out what it is actually putting out?

I might do, I'd like to get some straights and paint them anthracite, lower it a bit and leave the rest as is.

I really like driving these, I had a go in an MG ZR diesel one once that had had a lot of work done to it and it pulled really really hard, seriously its the car that seemed to pull hardest and I have been in some pretty fast cars.

It was all over in about 200 revs however, very peaky but made me laugh like an idiot.
