What you getting as an average MPG mate?

Think they look good in red when clean and shiny! Make sure you make the effort to keep in nice.

What did you try as an alternative when test driving? What made you pick the ST over rivals?

Average mpg is about 25 mpg but mostly town driving (have seen it as low as 19 not long after I got it though )
Some people on the ST OC have seen 30-35 mpg on a long run!!

Alternatives were just the usual golf gti, civic type r, but once I drove the ST the engine note from the 5 pot was a winner for me and the way there seems to be plenty of torque anywhere in the range ( once moving ) unlike the type r where you have to strangle it all the time to get the best out of it.

Had a Panther Black ST3 and averaged a nudge over 24mpg during my three year / 24,000 mile ownership. Shocking mpg around town but pretty good > 30mpg on a long run.

I have been considering the ST as my next purchase but I'm surprised at the mileage you mentioned. I'd seen it quoted elsewhere as 20 for town, 40 for the road and 30 combined. May now have to reconsider for the Golf GT TDI 2.0 (170)

We used to see sub-20 most of the time. That's with the wife driving it. Great fun, but boy did it drink.

Also much prefer that shape with those darker headlights. They look so much more muscular than the softened up plain looking facelifted ones.

This was my daily drive so a lot of rush hour miles - anyone who drives around Southall can probably testify just how solid it is around rush hour! Take that out and I'd have thought 26ish would be achievable with normal driving.

Yeah the ST isn't one for anyone worried about mpg the volvo 5 pot likes a drink!!
All it takes is a couple of spirited drives and hello < 20mpg

I did a steady mainly motorway drive the other night and managed 34mpg. First time i've achieved that in nearly 2 years of ownership. Normally average around 27mpg.

Op how do you find the handling compared to the MR2? I went the opposite way from an ST to an MR2. ST was comfy fast but even with eibach's didn't handle so good vs the RWD mid engined MR2.

30+ on a long run?

My civic 1.8 does about the same, maybe a little more

In that case.... SOLD! Desperately want an tango orange one. Just worried about the fuel consumption! and bemoaning the complete lack of cruise control.

Yeah the ST is a bit boat like in the handling department compared to the MR2, saying that it isn't as bad as I was expecting from a tall heavy hatch.

Did the eibachs make much difference to ride comfort? as they are on the list for after Christmas and highly rated on the ST OC and much needed IMO if not just to get rid of the 4x4 looking gap in the arches

The mr2 was my 2nd one, just something about cheap rwd mid engine layout that keeps drawing me back
