well, heres my new car!

its a 1999 mrk 4 TDI 90bhp with a AGR engine, its done 125k and is a HUGE step up from my previous 306

due to the 306 coming to a premature death, i bought it from my boss, due to needing a car asap

it drives really really well, and i feel right at home in the interior, i love the blue dials and red needles/switches and the armrest!

so far ive fitted my cd player, plugged it in to the changer in the boot tongue out

and i done the EVRY mod, i know its not everyones cuppa tea, but ive ran it before on my MK3 tdi, and it was brilliant for what it is!

looking into bigger nozzles (.216) maybe a bigger intercooler, lowered a tad and possibly a bora front end!

going to give it a bloody good detail this week too! already got the wheels off and removed the tyres ready for a refurb!

ill keep you posted!

Shed dude,i bought one 110 hp a month ago.

Its fecking horrible to drive in all aspects compared to my other car (Clio 172).

With 170,000 miles on it, the engine is great thought, even though is horribly slow and made me think why i didn't get the 130 hp tdi golf.

MPG is the best thing about it,amazing i must say.

And i see you are coming from a 306,how did you find the gearchange in the golf?

do you think so? im suprised to hear a negative comment tbh! i know its only a 90, but the EVRY makes it a bit more lively!

its a very 'lazy' drivers car, as in the seat is back, arm on the armrest, just a nice relaxed drive tbh!

it revs really nicely, almost like a petrol, its just a nice place to be inside, nice comfy/slightly buckety seats, dark interior, nice blue and red lights, no squeaks or rattles

the 306 was alright, but basic compared to the golf in my eyes, and the golf seems much more well made

i like the little touches, like the rear lights for when i open the doors to get my lil boy out at night

the little sunvisor above the mirror
the MFA
the button you can press to lock the doors when your inside
the button to lock the back windows
the front and rear cupholders & the fact they hold my lil lads bottles!(306 never had cupholders)
armrest cubbyhole
and the flippy key!

maybe its just me being sad, but the 306 didnt have these, its just nice to have these little creature comforts, and with my previous cars being a bit more old school, im appreciating these!

and yes the fuel consumption isnt to bad, although i cant run this car on waste oil like my old 306 frown

How can you even begin to compare on how a Clio 172 drives compared to a Golf? The Clio was made to be a hot hatch and the Golf was made to be a family hatch, comparing them on driving abilities is like comparing apple and orange.

I think you've picked up a great car. To extract more power from it you should be looking to swap the turbo for one from the Golf 110 TDI, then you can get the car remapped, put bigger nozzles and intercooler as you mentioned, and then your car will easily keep up with the 130 GT TDI, and yes, the car definitely needs to be lowered.

thank you, its always nice to hear some positive vibes smile

im not sure about turbo, thats going to prove costly, and i havnt exactly got loads of spare dosh to be throwing at it!

it sits really high on the 18's although its currently on 16's while i refurb the 18's

ill sort some suspension out for it, i dont want it on the deck, just need to bring it back down to earth a little!

You can pick up a 110 Turbo from the breakers for a couple hundred quid, but if do don't want to swap the turbo, a green cotton air filter and a remap alone will easily give you 120bhp on the stock turbo. I agree with the look, if you lower the car too much your car will be useless like some of the euro style show cars. Get it right, you will have a tasty looking motor. Here's a link to some coilovers that seem to have good reviews and are adjustable.

What the hell are you guys on!? It's a diesel Golf - a good wee car, but changing turbos, injectors etc is going to cost loads and for what exactly? So you can have a less reliable, more expensive to insure version of a car that you can buy standard anyway, and that isn't exactly a road rocket itself either.

Performace mods make sense on some cars, and this does not strike me as one of them. OP, if you want to save money, keep the car as is. When you want something faster, buy something that's faster out of the box.

I don't see the problem? Injectors are only £65 on eBay and the turbo is a straight swap for £200 and a remap for £250. All this may seem expensive at £500 but That will leave the car with 135ish bhp which is the more then the GT TDI 130 and last time I checked, a good 130 cost more then £500 extra then the 90. Even without the 110 turbo he would be looking at around 125bhp and this would cost £300 to get from 90 to 125bhp.

This.

Everyone likes to fettle, but spending any money modifying a long in the tooth, 4 dr, 90bhp diesel Golf that already has high miles is just plain barmy.

Why don't you save the dosh you were going to spend on these mods, sell the car and combine the proceeds to buy a 130 or 150 mk4 TDi?

Run it for a year then use the money youve saved commuting in a diesel golf to buy a decent car to mod, youll chuck money at that just to make it handle like a focus, which itll never do, looks in nice nick though

I agree with this. You can pick up GT TDI 110 for £1500 now and the 130 is about £2k and upwards. It's worth saving for the GT model and not throwing money at mods smile

The car looks good though smile

If this is a non PD car it will run veg oil, see http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/index.ph... I am 99% certain it will. Twin tank perhaps.

I would suggest keeping an eye open on an ebay search for a spare used turbo, should be no more than £100. Then if it goes you have the spare to hand.

Extract more power from it? Good grief, it's a diesel Golf. You're talking about giving it some pretty serious engine work to extract a little more DERV power from it? If thats a concern for the owner I'd suggest getting rid of the Golf and just buying something quicker than throwing a load of cash and work at an old, high milage diesel Golf.

Give the guy a break everyone, all this talk of "its only a high mileage golf" is nonsense, 125k is nothing on a diesel golf and what "serious" engine work are you talking about? There's nothing serious in changing the filter, nozzles, and giving the car a remap. All this is say £500 and say he payed 1k for the car, that's 1.5k for a Golf that has 125k with 130bhp.

As for the people recommending the 130/150 bhp GT TDI Golf, fair play, but even then a decent one with less then 150k will cost around the 2.5k mark, which is a grand more then his golf with all the work done to get the same power. Infact my mate who sells these has sold a few Golf 130 TDI's for 2-2.5k in the past 3 months and they all had 150k+ mileage, one having 190k and that was remapped to 165bhp and that car was solid, so all I'm saying is that 125k isn't alot and a 130 similar in condition to his car will cost him a fair few quid more.

Why do people love to piss on other peoples parades? the guy has come from a stty 306 to a mk4 golf...to him its a big step up and you can clearly tell by his posts that he is very excited and passionate about his diesel golf.Trust me there are petrol heads out there that get more excited and more enjoyment out of a disel golf than some of you miserable people get from your 30k porsche's

Tinkering and wasting money on cars to some people is part of the fun! im sure he could sell the car and buy a buss pass for 2 years and save the money he saved from fuel, insurance etc to buy something even better but wheres the fun in that?

Not everybody has experienced super cars so when you come from something like a 306 to a golf it can be a fun experience for some people so why they fk come and piss all over their parade and make out like their car is st and not worth doing anything to it? like i said tinkering is all part of the fun.

I hate it when old people moan at young people who spend money modding and tuning low powered cars and lecture them on how they should save the money drive around until they are old and grey so that they then can get insured on something fast. i know people who wasted loads of money when they where young on cars and don't regret it because at the time there where having a hell of a lot of fun doing it.

You are missing the point, making snap judgements and being needlessly aggressive.

No-one is pissing on anyones parade or criticising OP's car - just being realistic and trying to give some honest advice to try to save the OP from wasting his hard earned.

Sticking a filter or cheap Ebay exhaust on for a few quid is one thing (we have all been there) but messing around changing turbos etc is just daft on a car like this, creating a lot of expense and reliability issues as someone else pointed out, for very little return.

By the way I am 28. However not knowing how old you are, you may still class me as 'old' regardless.

I have clawed my way up the motoring ladder from some proper shedding so have been there myself. The dosh I wasted buying and modifying a high mileage old Corsa GSi after I passed my test would have paid for me to actually have a decent motor if I had been a bit more long sighted.

Yep there are good bits in The Golf and that is why i got it instead of a much better handling Focus etc.

Im not for nothing negative, the car does great that that is designed/made for.
Just is extremely slow compared to what i driven as a daily drive before but that doesn't bother me at all.

And is really but really stupid to do any engine mods to it,theres no point at all.Theres really pointless to do it any mods at all but i leave that to everyones personal taste.

Really wanted to try this, but given that it might give misfires etc...its better to run it on diesel.Don't know if anyone done it yet.
