Well inspired by last weeks SOTW I thought I would nip out and take some pictures of my GTi. As you can see it is a Mk2 GTi 16v in Oak Green. I have had it for a few years and ownership has been interesting to say the least! I'm pretty sure 90% of the mechanical parts are now new and I'm just starting on the cosmetic stuff.
I used to run it as a weekend car and had a Celica as a daily but I have now sold that and the Golf is my everyday car! Well I say everyday, I car share with a friend so it does one week on one week off. It has never let me down away from home and has a habit of breaking whilst it's in the garage which I guess is quite handy.
Sometimes I wonder why I own such an unreliable old banger but then on days like today I take it out the garage and run it up into the Peak District and back and it puts a smile on my face like you wouldn't imagine. There is just something about pressing on in the Golf which just pushes my buttons. Maybe it's because I've put so much work into but the only way I can explain it is similar to James May and his fizz. I have read a couple of threads from people on here who didn't get on with their GTi I suppose they're love it, hate it cars. Anyway sorry to bore you all, just thought I'd share my experience with you.

Has reliability been a big issue then? i was thinking about getting a mark 2 as a daily (only do about 100 miles a week) but might pass if i would spend more time fixing it than driving it.

Like I say I have replaced a lot of parts mainly because it's so easy to work on and the parts are so cheap. As soon as something looks on it's way out I'll replace it for peace of mind. I haven't had it properly break on me yet and hopefully it never will as I try and look after it mechanically. I wouldn't rely on it to get me to work everyday without fail all year round though.

Do 120 plus miles a week to work and back plus a few other trips in my 215k 8valve gti and it's pretty reliable! Heaters aren't that great but as long as you keep on top of things like fluids, belts etc you should be okay Has reliability been a big issue then? i was thinking about getting a mark 2 as a daily (only do about 100 miles a week) but might pass if i would spend more time fixing it than driving it.
