Have had this for a bit now I thought it was time for a thread. Since I was little being in mercedes garages while mum went thru a series of w123-124 TE's I was always fascinated by the G, the fact I never saw one on the road, didn't know anyone had one and very rarely saw a road test (pre internet) other than the brochures I hoarded. I test drove the usual suspects, land cruiser/range rover ff etc but the moment I shut the door on the G I knew it was the one, so different from anything I've owned, so different from any other vehicle on sale. Got talking figures and mercedes have some seriously good deals at the minute, couple that with the good residuals and it was a done deal. It now compliment's my daily driver and other heavyweight off roader....the panda 4x4.
What's it like? It's a 350cdi bluetec, 9 odd sec's to 60 and about 25mpg, nothing amazing really but the way it goes about it's business is really quite special. The whole thing has a solidness/togetherness/bomb proof feel that I haven't experienced since my old 91 w126 560sel. It isn't a drivers car yet somehow it is a petrolheads one and a car that will do everything you ask for life if you so desired, as happy at a 5star hotel as a pistonhead cars and coffee as fully loaded and working hard during the week. Testimony to this is the way I can predict which of my friends/family will hate it and which will love it.

I work next-door to where these are built. A couple of years back we were invited to accompany the test drivers on their local off-route course. The course basically consists of scaling a local mountain (1450m).
We went in a fleet of Gs and a couple of 6x6 Pinzgauers. The G-Wagons (G500s at the time) were as capable as the Pinzgauers going up and, really rather surprisingly, were faster going back down (in the dark, snowing, drivers having had a few schnapps - I kid you not). I remember the vehicle being airborne at various points and also banging my head on the headlining a few times.
Extremely capable vehicles. Oh, and the soon-to-be-replaced (
) G55 AMG makes such a fantastic sound!
