I have been looking at these for a ages now , weighing up if I should get one . I do 60 miles a day for work and knew petrol may be off a concern. I also spent so much time on my aerodeck that I did not want to sell it. However in the end I bit the bullet and started looking. I also thought if I do not do it now I will never do it , what with the price of fuel etc.

It also amuses me that people talk more about "what does your car do to the gallon" more than what a car is like to drive or the fun aspects. People also forget their new diesel focus (etc) cost 15,000+ and may be able to do 50% more to the gallon but the 13,000 cheaper my car was buys quite a bit of fuel.

I decided on a smallish budget and tried to find the best I could. I went for a facelift version as I thought I would minimise the risks of a 5th gear synchro problem.

Ended up with this :

108,000 miles , full history and wheels have been refurbished - not as well as I would of done them though -. Cambelt at 101,000. Only modifications are twin remus backboxes (apparently developed for the car originally) and a typhoon long arm induction kit. The car sounds standard normally but is crazy when you put your foot down and through VTEC. Paid £1900 quid with 6 months Tax andbrand new type r mats. SO the car was say 1700 quid which I thought was a good price, even though I knew it would need bits doing.

I have already spent a few hundred (well 5 if you must know !) at VTEC direct in winsford who know everything about these cars. SO handy that I live 2 miles away. Its had :

Valve clearances , sump removed and properly sealed , 2 cv boots , all breaks stripped , metal cam-end seal , plugs , oil and filter and gearbox oil.

Now the annoying part. Although the car is a facelift they did not start fitting better parts to the gearbox until later (260+ on the vin number) and mine is way off that. Damn it , why did I not read that before !. ANyway at the moment the gearbox seems ok and drives well. ALthough changes from 3rd to 5th at high revs are impossible and I need never to do it as its a bad habit. I did to fit new handbrake cables as the handbrake is absolutely useless and a new air con radiator. They I can start sprucing it up on the outside. No more mods though.

I'm a big fan of these. Yours looks great (they're even better without the boot spoiler!). Hopefully you keep a blog going on this. Enjoy.

Lovely car mate, one of the only cars I regret selling. Had mine in Black, but would have preferred red.

Nearly bought one of these a few months ago, great cars imo. Still might get one later in the year.

Syncro rebuild isn't fun though, about £800 IIRC.

I like the black colour that turns purple in the sun smile pirates black i think.

Great cars. My Dad had a 1999 model for 3 1/2 years as a company car, it did 64k in the time, and went through £5k worth of tyres, and a truely eye watering amount of super unleaded. But oh hell was it fun to drive...

cloud9

It's the diff that makes it IMO, turn into a corner, get back on the power and you can feel the diff doing it's magic and pulling the nose into the corner. Superb. I had the pleasure of driving at least once a week and apart from a noisy cam belt idler it was faultless, impressive considering the abuse it had, although 5th syncro was starting to cry enough when it was t-boned by some old git in his 90's with a pace maker.

cry

It was damage badly enough to be classed as a Cat C, and having seen the state of it, I reckon it was history, severely distorted B pillar, rear passenger door utterly destroyed and about 45 degrees of toe out on the left rear corner where most of the suspension links had been torn from the body.

Amazingly it was rebuilt and is still on the road today. If you know anybody with V89 KEG, just don't tell them!

THanks all, yes I'll keep the post updated with pics as I go. VTEC direct can repair the synchro for 600 all in. Maybe a job for the future, the gearbox is slightly weeping and would cost a few hundred to remove clean up and make perfect anyway, so i will keep a close eye on that and reverse and 5th. !.

I remember a very positive review of one of these in Autocar comparing the R with an Impreza and something else.

Agree. Just need to drive one. Are they as quick as an EP3?

I can personally attest that there is not much in it. A few more BHP in the Accord, a little less weight in the Civic, makes them pretty even as I found when I was following an ATR, both of us on the VTEC. They have different characters as cars though, the Accord is bigger and heavier, does not rev as quickly and has a lower redline, whereas the EP3 is smaller and lighter and feels rawer and more manic, but the Type R DNA is strong in both of them.

Accord Type Rs are excellent cars, massively underrated imo.

Used to have a pre facelift one in the same colour, only bought it as a stop gap and it was cheap at just over a grand with 12 months ticket on it. Love'd it that much kept it just sort of 2 years. Much under-rated car, makes you wonder what they'd of been like with the V6 out of the NSX in them.

Polished the life out of it today :

Runs great after the fettling vtec direct did with it, and I added some new Honda red Hs on the wheels.

You can see my poor old Aerodeck in the background. Should be gone on sun though
