After years of M5's a change in circumstances at work meant I now do 15k a year and the costs of tyres, fuel etc just meant I was getting fed up. I decided to get something more economical but didn't want to loose the comfort of a large car or the toys you get in an M5. I ordred the Skoda in March and took advantage of their 0% VAT offer.

Its a 1.6 CR Greenline using the same engine you'll find it a Golf Bluemotion. In this car its still capable of over 70mpg and qualifies for £30 road tax. Spec includes European Nav, Bluetooth, heated seats front and rear and a variety of other bits. But it has some newer tech too like Keyless entry, Park assist (parallel parks itself) and Bluetooth streaming (streams music from an mp3 player without it being directly connected).

Its not that quick but making progress isn't hard. I'm on course for 750-800 miles from a tank with a mixture of driving and as a tank is 60 litres, I'm very pleased with it and I find I get alot less attention than I did in the M5.

From what I gather the official economy figures for these cars are 64.2mpg

Bearing in mind that the MFD over reads by about 10% I would say you would be lucky to achieve this, unless you spent all day every day on the motorway.

A bloke on another forum managed 56.5mpg after 612 miles through france.

That looks very smart, or as others would say Superb.. getmecoat

I like how far Skoda has come in recent years and ditching those jokes from years ago. The spec tally is very impressive for the money, but you forgot the best bit of a new car. The 'new car' smell. yum

Enjoy! thumbup

I saw that, but looking at their website there is a greenline S, greenline SE and a greenline Elegance.

The combined figure is 64.2 but 76mpg on the motorway. My peak figures on the MFD are currently 96mpg over 30 miles on the motorway and an urban figure is 71mpg. Based on the miles travelled so far and the outstanding range, I'll be a little short of 800 miles on my first full tank. On Brikosda, one owner has managed 900 miles on a tank.

Logic says that buying a brand new car to save money is a fools game but the Superb is so cheap to run compared to an M5 that I'll break even after just 2 years and from then on save alot of money.

Looks very smart, a perfect cruiser. Obviously very different to the M5 in many ways, but how does the build quality and refinement compare?

Wow, a new 1.6 diesel from an M5. You are committed, fair play. Personally, I'd feel my world was falling in. Interesting to hear how you feel as time goes by. Did you consider the estate?

Don't listen to the bull on consumption,it will get better, alot better.I had a Passat Bluemotion and I did home(S of F) to Calais on 2/3 of a tank.We regularley saw 1300 kms per tank.
Taking into account I live in the Pyrennees and don't drive on straight roads very often I think it's bloody amazing fuel consumption.
Now I drive Nissan Pathfinder because the VW was bobbins in 8 inches of snow.

Who'd have thunk Skoda could change so much?
Look at the quality, look at the rear legroom!

The estate was about 20% more and the boot is so large on the batchback that I didn't think I'd need it.

The Superb feels just as solid as the E39. There is more road noise at speed but not by much. The steering and brakes on the Superb are much better and the M5 wins for power hands down. The main difference is that the M5 can feel frustrating at low speed but when moving briskly it all comes together and feels great. The Superb feels nice all the time but isn't as exciting to drive.

As for photos of some of the M5's, see below

I'm seriously tempted to go and have a look at one as I need a new car later this year and was looking at 1.6 diesels from other manufacturers.

Why? The 520D of the same spec was £39,950, a rediculous price. It has more power but I would need to stump up for BMW service prices, big tyres and paintwork that looks like I painted it. Plus the deprecation was about the same percentage wise but as the car is so expensive its alot more money each year.

On top of that I'm abit fed up with BMW's, or rather the poor attitude of some of their dealers.
