Kiethton's Red Porsche 924 s

I was lucky enough to acquire a rather nice Porsche 924 s (thanks again Matt!) and here begins a record of how the time with the car goes.....
The timing is brilliant as I had been looking for a car that would allow me to learn some basic mechanics on for a while, which when coupled with a new Job causing a substantial fall in mileage led me to put my current car up for sale, sick of the; complexity should anything break, high flow injectors, high pressure fuel pump, £300 a corner tyres and £470 a year tax. Although it hasn't sold of yet i couldn't pass on the opportunity, I think the trip to Le Mans with PH may be my final long trip in it....
I collected the porsche from Matt on friday evening, with first sight as I pulled up on the opposite side of the road to it. I was immediately thrilled, it looked just right! Even my girlfriend, whom I had persuaded to come with me to drive it back, was amazed (she is normally very sceptical of older "classics", preferring more modern cars). However even she was impressed, it looked very smart parked on the road, with no signs of rust or even a shopping trolley dent!
Leaving her sat in the car I had a quick look around the car with an open mouth before knocking on the door. Matt kindly showed me around the car, pointing out all possible issues after giving me a substantial pile of paperwork, counting all the cars previous history, MOT's, Invoices, the lot. Once again, Matt, thanks for your time and for the car I'm sure you'll see it around the local area soon!
The 5 mile journey back I was excited watching every move of the red porsche in the rear view mirror, wishing I was able to drive it whilst my girlfriend was grinning from ear to ear. Upon arriving home with no drama's at all and parking the Porsche on the drive my girlfriend was smitten, admitting that even though she was sceptical at first when I told her I needed her help (and 3rd party driving insurance clause) to pick up a car older than I am, she loved its character, looks and was looking forward to being in it in the future.
Although the car looks mint there are a few minor issues to be resolved prior to an MOT:
NS headlight bulb has blown:

The rear wiper doesn't work - it moves slightly but doesn't seem to move totally making me suspect the motor and as its present would fail an MOT if it doesn't work.
Other than these pressing MOT issues there are a few others that I'll address after the MOT and when the car is in daily (or in my case weekend) use i'll attempt to fix the below as they are not essential (barring the first) and when the time allows:
When moving the car there was a a fluid leak showing in a puddle:

The car is in need of a PH sticker, one or 2 will be acquired and applied ASAP
The sun-roof is missing a clip to hold it don on the NS - doesn't leak though!
The seats could do with being re-upholstered and there is a little cracking to the top of the dash (not at all time pressing, just more cosmetic as funds allow)
However these are just minor things, intend to use the car and put a few miles under its belt!
Although I had intended to have spent some time cleaning it today and replacing the bulb the weather has been against me, although these will be completed ASAP, with updates posted on this thread and likely an awful lot of mickey-taking as I remove all the skin of my knuckles and ask questions that others may view as blonde.....
I have however got the bulbs and they will be fitted ASAP, but there are a couple of other shots below, including one of my current view and reminder, but plenty more will be added as soon as the weather improves and I get a chance to give it a good clean!

The dashboard crack is very common.
I'll be watching this thread with much interest and am looking forward to finding out what needs doing to make it road legal again and how you get on repairing the jobs that need doing.
They're great little cars and I've already posted in the other thread how my Dad had a 1981 model in 2004 and how it never once let him down. He liked it so much he even started it using it as his daily despite having an Alfa 146 and a brand new company Passat at the time.
I have made myself a promise that I'll get one myself one day and every so often I look at the classifieds to see how they're getting on price and condition wise. It seems you truly have found a very good honest example of one though and best of all you didn't pay a penny for it.

If you need any advice on fixing it that costs as much as you paid for the car, http://upfrontporscheclub.com/
Well today was the day the headlight was going to be fixed after the rain ruined my attempts last week....
All was going well, popped off the cover and changed the bulb. Upon looking at the one i had just taken out the filament was still intact.....
I inserted and connected the new one anyway, when turning on the lights the bulb still wasn't working?!?! I then checked and swapped the NS/OS headlight fuses, as according to this website http://jenniferandjon.com/ABRacing/index.php?optio... however the same NS headlight still wasn't working.
When checking the diagram on the above link it seems that one relay is missing, and the headlight relay at that:

is it likely that this is the cause of the NS headlight not working, even though the offside is?
I think its time to go and order a Haynes manual off ebay......
On another note took the opportunity to show the current car with its back to its new, well old, red replacement! First to Le Mans, putting an MOT on the Porsche then its being listed on here....

Looking good.
Rear wiper IS NOT an MOT failure, not sure where you got that nugget from. Genrally it is either the wiring as it goes into the hatch at the flex point or the big gear is knackered. The Germans left it as LHD sweep so it isn't a lot of use anyway.
A common problem of failed headlights on 924/944 is where the wiring flexes as the head light goes up & down. Check the loom carefully in this area.
Not sure if the 924 is exactly the same as a 944 as regards headlight lift but generally only one motor & relay.
Come on over to www.tipec.net loads of 924 owners there who'll be able to help.

I'll check that site our...may see me over there...and the one above soon!
Well my 335i has sold and is being collected on Monday to get shipped to NZ....
Enter the porsche, it was always my intention to use it as a daily driver whilst trying to save for a house deposit (although the classifieds keep catching my eye) and that moment has now come. I would have run it in addition to the 335i but with my current finances and girlfriend tax it wouldn't have worked, no matter how good it would have been.
So the MOT is booked for tomorrow to see what it fails on (I already know the headlight will cause a problem in its current state) and if all else is good this will be repaired over the weekend and submitted for its re-test on Monday
For the moment, once its passed i'm going to add it to the multicar policy for the remainder of the term to save my very important 3rd year of NCB before trying to source a specialist classic policy for it....(recommendations for 1 November appreciated - 23 y.o, 3 years NCD, BR6 postcode and 6k a year)
So fingers crossed for tomorrow and a clean bill of health and once again thanks to Matt for the car initially!

Id also join the PCGB site. The 924 sub-forum is dead, but the 944 forum is extremely active and a 924S is a 944 anyway.
I thought that representitives of each site both suggested their own site and the other? Its a shame that TIPEC seem to have welched on this. The PCGB site is better, but Jon Mitchells advice has redressed the balance somewhat recently.

Well MOT day today and....
It failed....
Not too bad though;
Power steering fluid leak - perished hose
Brake imbalance - adjustment needed
Battery holding little charge - replace
Brake line corrosion - minor
So all in all it's not too bad, also the headlight seems to have fixed itself as it wasn't mentioned which is a bit of a result...
The 335i is now getting collected by the new buyer tomorrow so fingers crossed I can get the outstanding issues and MOT done before Sunday's SS at AM as I'm carless!
Oh and re. The forum will likely join, can only help with the classic insurance and info

Brake lines arent a small job, but it shouldnt be too expensive. Be carefull though: Ive paid a fraction of what some 'specialists' have charged others for over the tank brake lines - its easy to get your leg lifted.
Fingers crossed it'll be ok, may even suggest a little wire wool and oil....he did describe it as being a very minor/borderline thing though...fingers crossed! Thanks for the advice thoughGassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
