anticipating the imminent demise of my old diesel Focus, I've chopped it in for an even older Multipla

still loving this car, it's so handy

dog slow though (even compared to a 75hp focus) and I got a shock the first time I tipped it into a bend at a speed approaching that which I would de every day in the ford

My mum used to have one in the bright green they did. I loved that car, it was so interesting (and still is) compared to most other family cars on the roads.

The interior is great, and the wide track made road holding pretty darn good for an MPV.

They're great cars, my Mum had one when they were new which I drove a bit, although ours was turquoise with bright blue seats. They're surprisingly fun to drive but they are incredibly wide so you have to be careful in multi-storey car parks!

it really is amazingly roomy

I've driven other 7 seaters, sharan/galaxys, voyagers, grand scenics, apart from the lack of that 7th seat, this seems much roomier, whilst being shorter, easier to park and the 'boot space' is far bigger

I love these cars! Proper madcap design of the sort that the French used to do so well. This version is a future classic IMHO. (I seem to recall that the Mk2 was considerably toned down.)

I would have got one except that there was to my knowledge no auto option.

in other news, changing a headlight bulb is the easiest thing in the world, unrestricted access, pop off rubber cover, pull out wire, unclip it and bang the new one in

the seperate main beam light is a bit weird though, a long torx bit through a little hole, then an H3 bulb which aren't on sale at every petrol station

So nearly bought one of these back in the day. The MK2 is very normal looking but I like the bug eyed Mk1.

How is the rubberised covered dashboard plastics? Only asking as a lot of the second hand ones, that I looked at, had the appearance of burnt skin. All peeling and blistered.

actually, that is a bit weird, lots of sticky soft rubbery bits on the dash, I removed the 'surface layer', the internal door handles were all scratched to buggery, and the outside rubbery bit next to the handles are degraded and hard and cracked

older Fiat plastics are like that, were the same when I had my Bravo's years ago. Not sure if you can or not, but the trick used to be to fit Marea plastic (solid) handles in place of the original exterior ones. Will see if i can gig up anything re compatability.

ove thes old crazy blobs... if i need a sprog runner / tip car i think this will be up there, and the missus will hate the looks which makes it all the more fun. I remember from years ago there were a couple running coupe turbo engines

just did a 2000+km trip heavily loaded trip through the low countries and all across Engerland without a prob - erm, except for running out of fuel Xmas Eve on the M20 - closed services combined with heavy fuel use from the roofbox and general fully-loadedness
quick phonecall to ADAC in Münich, who phoned France, who phoned the AA, who gave me a free 6 litres

run from Barnard Castle/A66, to London, through the city, to Thurrock for a cheapo overnighter (in fact free!), then Dover, then Düsseldorf - got here and found the roofbox was open the whole way, just resting on the lock

it'll be rolling over 100,000km in the next two weeks too

Random question - you weren't on the M6 northbound near Stoke on Christmas Eve mid-afternoon were you? We got passed by a German-plated Multipla the same colour as yours. Only remember it as I hadn't seen one for ages plus it being on foreign plates.
