This is our (the wife's) GTI, we've owned it since February 2003 and paid £1100 for it back then. This is the best angle of the car, which is totally original, as the roof is de-laminating and it needs the driver and passenger seats replacing as the bolsters are shot. Runs well, but is at that slightly smokey, but very smelly stage, pre valve stems being done. No blue smoke yet, but whiffs when you start it up and drive off, like old cars do!
I've got to that stage where Im wondering "Will the value of these cars really ever go up much". I.e. do you keep an old car and eventually spend money doing it up, or sell it for one of the newer hot hatches that are getting really cheap now...decisions....what do ya reckon?
You can get the bolsters reconditioned as long as the leather hasn't torn, so you don't need to buy any seats - and when you say the roof is delaminating, do you mean the lacquer is peeling? if so - it's a known problem and any half decent bodyshop would be able to sort it for you.
A decent GTI will hold its money now, a non-running shed will go for about £750, a sheddy runner around £1k, and anything approaching half decent would be around £1750 and up.
For what it's worth - as described, I'd give you £850 for it, no problem.
