Second car, second MX5.

Some of you will remember my last thread ( My first car - 1990 MX5 ), unfortunately, the red one met it's end.

But I've been bitten by the bug early, and since I wasn't quite finished having fun in an MX5 I've gotten myself another one. This one was previously owned by another PH Ecosse guy - it's a bit newer, a bit more powerful, a bit lower and a bit quieter - quite pleased with it really!

Managed to catch a 10 minute break in the rain to go out for a couple of pictures with my mate and his newly painted '5, so here they are. I'll keep this thread updated with any progress!

How did the old one meet its end, mechanical failure or damaged?

New one looks tasty, 1.6?

Damage unfortunately mate, was the offside rear quarter so I decided repairing it would be a bit uneconomical. Was going to need a load of welding done underneath for the next MOT and the hood wasn't up for another winter anyway - so best to cut the losses!

New one is an 1800. Definately pulls quite a bit better than the 1.6 IMO.

You should sell the red one to someone willing to fix it up as a project. Keep these cars on the road!

Sorry to hear that matey, what's the insurance situation like with the bigger engine?

Been yearning for an MX5 for quite some time, the only drawback is insurance prices at the moment.

Would love for somebody to be able to keep it on the road - but I'm unsure as to the total extent of the damage, and if it turns out the chassis is kinked or something, I would hate to be the one who allowed an unsafe car to be running about after being repaired and sold on!

Insurance this year is £1000 less than it was last year (now I'm a year older with 1 years NCD), but the red one would've been £870 to insure - so it's about £200 more than the 1.6, which on the whole I'm alright with.

Looks smart just goot myself a 1.6 eunos for very little money all moted will put it on the road once my quantum kit car runs out of tax. Im 20 got a insurance quote for £1100 will have to check if i can transfer my exsisting policy for the kit over to the mx5 if not got to cancel. Who did you insure with.

What are the plans for the new car?

Not too much exterior wise - intend on getting a set of wheels done in black, was having a play with the old white ones yesterday and I'm not sold on them. Also, green and white is a dangerous colour combination in Scotland..!

Going to get the old roll bar back in there too, undecided on a colour for it though.

I want coilovers or something to squat the back end down the the same hieght as the front, then eventually forced induction!

Forget how it looks, that nose down slant is what makes it corner so nicely.

I like the green and white obviously

If you're worried, not fancy gold for the wheels instead.

Handling is a marked improvement on the red one - the LSD seems a lot fresher too!

I was thinking about Gold/bronze on the wheels too... Tried on the anthracite 14's and it didn't look right. Might paint the Mr2 ones in gold, they're sort of growing on me!

Yeah, they're awfy like the Enkie rims.

Get those spacers on too, get them back to the Mk2 wheel offsets pretty much.

After a year of owning one of these, only just learned how to do a cheap mans lazy eye mod.

Was good fun for about 10 minutes, then I decided it looked st and put it back to normal.

Would love to say drifting accident, but it was something much more boring involving a bus..!

Not much going on in the way of mods yet, but I have been cruising about this evening with the roof down in the dark listening to this, feeling quite cool, grinning like an idiot and probably looking like a bit of an tool

I'd paint that bonnet satin black, fit a set of spot lamps for the classic rally look (the lights are practical for brisk winter driving too) and fit a set of all-weather/rain tyres for Scottish back road exploring.

I'm still tempted to get one.

The bonnet currently on the car has a couple of dents, and since I've still got the red one I was considering getting it wrapped black as a temporary thing until I can afford to get the front end painted properly!

Well, the mk2.5 is more comfortable and refined, so for day to day commuting it's a great car. But you should buy a mk1 to run alongside it at the weekends so that if you break it you'll still have transport?
