1996 Volvo 850 T5
Discussion
I picked this hero of a car up on Saturday for £950. It's the top-spec CD model with (as far as I can ascertain) every option box ticked. It's got a completely full service history for all it's 127k miles, some rather nice (albeit ride-ruining) Volan wheels from an 850R and the comfiest seats ever.
I love love love it!

Very nice. Is it a manual or auto? A friend of mine is a Volvo fanatatic and he's on the lookout for a nice 850 T5 but they are starting to get rare now. I think prices are firming up too so if you look after yours you could get free motoring.
I've got a P2 V70 T5 that I bought for a cheap runabout and it's one of the best cars I've had. I even took it around Cadwell last week

Great catch at 8 mins! One tip though, hands at 9:45 unless changing gear, makes for smoother driving I've got a P2 V70 T5 that I bought for a cheap runabout and it's one of the best cars I've had. I even took it around Cadwell last week

Probably a stupid question but what sort of MPG do you see from a T5? I'm looking at cheap Volvo's as a next car and the T4's and T5's keep cropping up for very little £££.

You're right about the hand positioning but I find with the huge wheel and slow rack it's not that comfortable to use. My mpg is around 26 knocking around, the 850 may be slightly better?

Don't be silly
Edit: Blimey is shakes under braking! Is that coming from the rear?
We had one of those (non T5) as a dog walking car. It got regularly abused but refused to die. We also LPG converted it which worked well
I was after a T5 at the time as they were rediculously good value for money but the wife thought there wasn't much of a market for transporting dogs at 140mph

There wasn't any shaking (that I can remember
) but the rear brakes got pretty grumbly as the day wore on. Plenty of meat on the pads but they were fitted before I bought the car and are probably budget so will be changed before the next outing.SWMBO has a P2 V70 2.4T (5 pot) and it is just about to pass 184k miles. Other than a few wear and tear bits of maintenance, it is stonking and the most comfy car we've ever owned. I take the attitude if it's good enough for the BiB, it must be an ok car. The earlier T5s are very much a 'cult car'.

Yeah the slow rack is a bit odd. I did my M25/M1/M6/M54/A5/A44 trip back to uni last night and measured 30.1 overall until I hit the M54, where some more...ahem...liberal speeds were utilised, and every roundabout exit on the A5 was a chance for acceleration fun on max boost. So overall I averaged 27.6. Which is not bad seeing as it was very heavily laden, getting thoroughly hooned, and it's an auto!Synchromesh said:
Glad it's getting treated like it should.
How's the auto?
Of course How's the auto?

I'm quite enjoying it to be honest! From a driving fun point of view it's not really much of an issue - yes engine braking can't be used as much but the kickdown is truly vicious and more than makes up for it! And stop/start traffic is soooo much nicer.
