106 GTi Restoration Project

Hi guys,

I'm new on here but have been browsing for a long time. Thought I'd post up about my car - sorry its a bit long and many many pictures.

A bit of background info... I bought up my 106 GTi a year ago this month. It was a heap but bought as a project. When I first bought it it had a dent in almost every panel, body kit hanging off, and rust on several panels. Over the course of the last year I have set about restoring this and making it a beautiful standard example since you rarely see these in standard form.

Servicing The Car

First thing I did was give it a good service. All filters replaced, oil, coolant, plugs etc. Cleaned the throttle body and gave the fuel system a good flush!

Mechanical parts replaced over time:
New Radiator
New thermostat
New discs and pads all round
New tyres all round (Continental Premium Contact 2's)
New droplinks
New bushes
New front wishbones
New standard GTi exhaust

Interior Work

Next I moved on to tackling the interior, making it immaculate. I also fitted red carpet and seatbelts from a 106 Rallye and reconditioned some new leather seats. Think this looks great. I also did a subtle under-seat amplifier install to give the sound system a boost - but all hidden out of view

Bodywork and Rust Work

Now I moved onto tackling the bodywork. Whilst poking around I discovered that the rust in the rear arches was much worse than first anticipated. To my horror I managed to push a hole through into my boot!! So, I stripped out the car, began tackling the rust all over with a lot of drilling, sanding, treating and spraying. I did the engine bay, front wheel arches, underbody and rear arches. The worst were the rear arches as pictured below!

The Respray

Now comes the big part - the respray! A lot of long hard work in Halfords (yes chavvy halfords!) I managed to save up enough to get it resprayed. I gathered all the bits I needed, new badges, new aerial, new bodykit and sent if off to the painters. Whilst having this done I also got my wheels powdercoated

Now this brings it up to today. After waiting 90 days as instructed by the bodyshop, I thought it was time to give it a coat of polish and wax. Here are some pictures of the process I did for detailing my car

The process I used was Wash > Clay > Rinse > Dry > Polish > Protect

that looks fantastic, well done. always a fan of them in white too! if i were you, i could be persuaded by some rallye decals...

i had a saxo vts for around a year, and they are just fantastic cars, very under rated

Lovely looking 106 and you don't see that many in white. Nice work...

Was the initial cost the attraction for this one though as there must be plenty of really tidy gti's around still.

looking good the 106 is still the best hot hatch just so much fun.

i had a cherry red one when they were still current and i loved it so much that i now had another 2 in between picking up new cars.

Yes I am very pleased with how it's turned out, many hours have gone into it. Only thing I would like to do when I have the money is get my wheels redone in a brighter silver since they turned out way too dull

And yes the attraction to this car was that it was going very cheap and I fancied a project. I also specifically wanted one in Bianca White and since they're so rare to come across in this colour I decided to go for it

Ha, me too, it was my first car! I had a blue one and I loved it.

Yep, the later (Phase 2?) seats are so much nicer than the earlier ones that frankly look like baby sick. Inspired choice of carpet, wouldn't have thought that would look as good as it does.

Thanks everyone Yeh I do like the carpet, needed a good clean when I first got it but think it came up quite well. Stands out well from the white bodywork
