I meant to post this car up a while ago but didn't get round to it. Pieman's post has prompted me to do it.

I got the car earlier in the year; it had only one owner who had sadly died and the car had been dragged out of his garage with flat tyres by a scrap company. The Royale was listed on the bay but didn't sell, I spoke to the scrapman and ended up buying it from him or he was going to crush it. It looked too good to be crushed, particularly as there are hardly any left now.

I had it transported down to me from Manchester and set about getting it running and legal. It must have sat for a few years I think and needed quite a bit of work to recommision. The brakes were seized, fuel tank was rotted and filled with something that resembled pond water rather than petrol etc. It was good to see it come back to life, the more I drove it the better it seemed to run.

I've tucked it away now for winter and will get to work on the body and interior next year. The interior just needs stripping out and cleaning, the body is not as good as it looks. There is quite a bit of filler in the car, a combination I think of corrosion around the edges and the previous old boy tending to bump things as he got on a bit.

Anyway here are some photos:

One of the most interesting cars I've seen on here lately and a nice change to the usual.

Would LOVE to waft around in that. The velour seats are 1000 times better than the crap that Ford etc churn out now with seats like cardboard.

Excellent work smile

yes Threads like this give me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, thanks OP.

Crushed velour upholstery cloud9 is surely due for a comeback. Which manufacturer will be brave enough?

A beautiful thing; it makes modern cars seem hopelessly brash. I'm really glad you've saved it.

Took almost the same car on the Crumball Rally a couple of years ago. Great car.

If anyone is looking for one message me as we have a 2.6 or 2.8 Royale!

And no more thread stealing!

Thank you for the kind comments about the car.

I should add that the Royale does "waft" very well. In fact the most striking thing about the car is the ride quality. It rides better than, well, any modern car I have driven recently. Sure; push it and it will roll; but it does a good job of being a luxury car.

There was a thread on here not too long ago by Chris Harris lamenting the fact that ride quality had gone to pot. It was suggested that one of the reasons for this was that journalists insisted upon taking every car around a race track; the Royale would be hopeless on a track. However, on the road it, (and I feel I must futher qualify this statement) driven in an everyday manner, it is rather good.

Hi guys. I don't Google 'Royale' much as so little new stuff comes online about them but it's good to see this and some of you may have see the thread on this site which started a couple of years ago on my black 2.8 auto

I still feel bad about letting go of it but it was saved by Pieman (mentioned above) and it may live again.

this was it leaving my ownership back in October 12

Just been sorting out my old snap on tool box and found my Royale service trained chrome badge from when I went on the Vauxhall training course for the Royale sometime back in the early eighties and it brought back a few memories so thought I would google the Royale and see if any still survive. Lovely car but think we only sold one and that was the boss's demo lol
