Peugeot 206 GTi - A diamond in the rough?
Discussion
I do believe I have purchased this car as a bit of a bargain. I trawled through classifieds to find this motor for 6 months.
Ok I had to be driven from Melton Mowbray, 15 miles East of Leicester, to Cinderford, on the Welsh side of Gloucester to pick it up... Yes this was immediately after a long nightshift at a private school I work at... and indeed I had to listen to my dads music all the way there and all the way back... But I have wanted one of these for a while.
I have just burnt a £695 hole in my rather shallow pocket, but I love the way it looks, I love the way it drives and to me, though it is the 137bhp version, it doesn't feel underpowered. Not compared to the Peugeot 205XS I was running around in before (snappy, but by no means fast... or safe for that matter).
The only fly in the soup is that it's started vibrating and making a right hullabaloo when pulling off in first and moving into second. Something I need to get seen to at the local garage tomorrow (anyone have any ideas?). The odd chip here and there and small dent above the driver side tail light... but it's fairly obviously been used as a shopping cart. Assuming the vibration is an engine or gearbox mount (I've had that problem before).
I have plans for her too. Currently looking at cost effective routes for extracting a little more power from her. Very open to suggestions.
A few more details:
137bhp
11 months mot
6 months tax
2002
90k on clock

Doesn't. Look a bad motor, but you better check the logbook as if its a W plate it should be registered in early to mid 2000.
A mate of mine bought one years ago when it was quite newish, it was quite reliable mechanically but did suffer from the odd electrical gremlin.
It has just occurred to me that it's probably a 2000, not a 2002 hahaA mate of mine bought one years ago when it was quite newish, it was quite reliable mechanically but did suffer from the odd electrical gremlin.
My girlfriend has a 52 plate 206 GTI which is just coming up to 100,000 miles. It actually handles well and has a lovely gearbox and sharp steering. I also think it's the last of the good looking Pugs.
The one strange problem on it is its temperamental nature in cold weather and early in the morning. Since she got it (~60,000 miles) it regularly beeps about 0.3 miles into a trip and there's a 'catalytic converter fault' which comes up and it runs appallingly for a short period. Various garages have looked at it and not known what to do.
There's aren't many better value hot hatches on the road than the 206GTI. Hopefully the purchase will be problem free!
