Got the 1er brand new - took about 8 weeks from ordering to delivery - below are some of the options/choices I made:What are the running costs like?

It had 9 miles on it when it arrived and i've had it for 2 weeks now and loving it..

- anorak on* - visual differences between the M135i and normal M Sport models:
- The M135i doesn't have foglights (the M Sports do - which I think looks better!)
- The M135i has ferric? grey mirror caps (the M Sports have body colour or optional black)
- The M135i has a twin exit exhaust (the M Sports either have one single exit on passenger side or one dual exit on passenger side - depending on model)
- The M135i all came with leather interiors (the M Sports come with Alcantara as standard - leather is an option)
- The M135i have different 18" alloys compared to the M Sports
- The M135i all have the wider screen iDrive system (8.8 inch screen as opposed to 6.5 inch or whatever it is)
- The M135i have the ///M brakes stock (this is an option on the M Sports)
so far in city and around the doors seeing about 45 mpg - on a run c60 mpg.. probably change a bit over time.. and that's driving normally in comfort as opposed to driving in ECO PRO mode..

the 116d and the 118d are exactly the same engine (the 116d is just running a more economical map) - and I wasn't after performance with this car (else would have went for a petrol variant) - was more looking for decent family transport (hence 5 doors) with something that was decent to drive and not bad looking with gadgets.. the 1er ticked all the boxes - excellent fuel economy and low running costs, one of the best looking 5 door hatches IMHO (I think it actually looks better than the 3 door equivalent) as if it was designed with the 5 doors in mind, has great spec as standard (in M Sport trim level) and suits the bodykit and alloys as standard and is an excellent drive (rwd layout, good power delivery, sharp steering with a good balance to it and the M Sport suspension is forgiving enough for everyday driving but still stiff enough for the odd blast on the windy stuff).

I can't help but agree with the previous poster though, it looks so much like an M135i but only just makes more than 100bhp!

With regards to the engine - the 116d is perfect for me and every day driving. It's not going to win any prizes at the traffic light grand prix - but is more than capable of keeping up with every day traffic and doesn't feel out of it's depth on the motorway either. The economy (even when driven normally) is outstanding - and the drive on the twisty stuff isn't too shabby either. It definitely misses out in the raw power stakes - but if you were going for performance then you'd either get a petrol model (anything >118i) or a 120d/125d anyway - all of which are pretty capable on that front.

agreed!! - it's one of these cars I thought was a bit Meh when they first came out.. it's not one of the most flattering cars in pictures- but in the metal with the M Sport kit or in M135i spec I think they look pretty good.. you can appreciate the lines better (which are often hard to capture in pictures) - the official BMW press pics didn't exactly do it justice either! I looked at the 3 series.. but I knew i wanted the M Sport spec, which meant that I would have had to go for the 318d as a minimum and that starts off bare at c£30k iirc. We already have a Merc C200K saloon and as it was going to replace my A3 1.8T Sport (3 door) then I was naturally drawn to the hatch.Aesthetically the new 1er and 3er are very similar - something to do with BMW's 'template' design philosophy or something.. the front bumper and side skirts look broadly similar and inside the dashboards/centre console again follow the same design principles (although I think the quality of the 3 series dash was probably a bit better - maybe not as plasticky as the 1er?.. maybe that's just my perception though), the seats are the same as well. Preferred the M Sport steering wheel on the 1er. The 3er M Sport came with leather as standard - whereas the 1er came with Alcantara (which I actually prefer!) - the 3 series rear leg room/space didn't feel that much bigger than the 1 series (there is more headroom in the rear of the 1er than the 3er as well) and I'm not sure the boot is that much bigger either - plus on the 1 series you can pop the seats forward to almost flat and have a large useable cargo space if required.
I don't need a massively practical car - but myself and the wife do tend to split the nursery runs between us so it needs to be practical enough for me to get the little one in and out of easily enough and have easy access to the rear for lugging pushchairs and all the other paraphernalia around! - overall, happy I chose the 1 series - not only saving money, but feel its better suited to my needs.
I actually like the oversized Dame Edna twinkly headlights on the new 1er & the quality looks like a real step up too. 
Hurry up and depreciate M135i! 5-dr, Estoril.
It might have changed, as BMW have changed the price/spec recently, but at launch Prof Nav was 8.8, the 'nav the spec down (business? advanced?) was 6.5 inch screen.

I think the front looks amazing, whilst the front of the non m-sport models look horrendous.

This may seem like a rude thing to say and it isn't meant to be provocative. But, whilst I realise different people have different priorities, how can you justify spending a relatively large amount of cash on such a slow car? I'm just curious, you don't have to justify it if you don't want to of course.
