Following on from my E36 M3 thread - Click Me....this is my new daily drive.
2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8
Coming from a Cayman S and then a MK6 Golf GTI, I kind of wanted something in between the two. After deciding a track car would fullfill my thrills, I split my budget for 2 cars. For my DD I wanted something with similar power to the Cayman S but with the laid back cruisability that the Golf offered.
I contemplated a few different motors, but this was the best deal in terms of value, age and mileage (13,000km).
Because of the deal I got, I have quite a bit of slack in the depreciation figures. I know because of the badge it might hit hard, but I should be ok for a good while yet.
The GCC spec car is pretty much a full specification car with the exception of Sat Nav (which I think they have now added to the 2013 model. It does however come with some lovely Brembos all round and LSD at the rear.
The gearbox is auto only here, but even coming from the DSG in the golf this box is a gem (6 Speed ZF with paddles). Its smoother than the DSG in all but downshifting, and the paddles seems to work ok too. Part of the reason I think it works so well is because of the larger engine.
The car feels big and heavy when driving slow, but it is pretty quick and has great steering feel....so as a result, feels pretty nimble on the go. The engine is pretty much as I expected (develops about 303bhp and 260lb-ft). The throttle response is very keen, its eager to rev and sounds good both low down and higher up the range.
Interior is nothing compared with the Germans but its actually ok with only a few areas that are a tad tacky. Plastics are of a good standard, the seats are big/comfy and the stereo (although looks crap) sounds superb(Infinity System). Other features include keyless entry, push button start, climate control, ipod integration, HID lights but annoying no Bluetooth in the UAE spec cars (stupid!!)
All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the purchase. I like the way it drives, and I like the way it looks (although the it looks a bit steady from the front). I'm definitely not a badge snob and would consider another less established car based on this purchase.
I do really need to stop buying black cars! Not only are they a PITA to clean but in a country where is 40c+ most days it makes them a complete sweatbox!

We won't get this in the UK.We are a nation of badge snobs,so the only premium cars we'll buy are from Germany.Sad but true. I remember a conversation with a chap who'd had a month long driving holiday in the USA in a 3.0 auto Toyota Camry. He told me that is was the best car he'd ever driven and wanted to buy one when he returned to the UK. Not a chance, Toyota hadn't sold them in the UK since around 2000 as they didn't sell in sufficient numbers. We're our own worst enemies sometimes,there are some great cars we could be getting if weren't so image conscious.

This... absolutely this.I care nothing about the badge (check my car history
)... I buy a car that ticks the boxes I want.Why wont others?

Thanks!Only a few days in, and its a great car.
The auto box is a good match for the engine and it drivers really nicely.
Once thing I miss though is the engine braking I had in the DSG equipped Golf. Thankfully the brakes are up to the job and had a good feel.
It'll quite easily break traction though, and when it does i'm nearly through the windscreen with the TC cutting in.
Still think it looks a bit boring from the front though.

Don't see why not, they sold a heap of Coupes, the Genesis would do much better than the hideous Veloster, they won't sell a lot of V6s but 4 cylinder (n/a and Turbos) would sell if priced competitively (i.e. below the RCZ, Scirocco, Toybaru) as the Coupe was.steviegunn said:

Yeah, I always thought the Coupe did well in Europe.Its quite a big car, so I don't know how well a N/A 2.0 would cope. As I said though, the new 2.0 Turbo is not too far the old 3.8 in terms of stats. However being a detuned Evo engine, i'm not sure how economical it would be.
