Morning all,
Moving down to London earlier this year lead me to sell my beloved Porsche 944. It has been quite good using public transport this year, a nice change and great at the weekends. My works quite far out from the city though and the walk, tube, walk, train, walk to work soon became a touch tiresome on those rainy days. What I needed (read wanted) was a car. Google maps promised me a time saving, who am I to argue? I thought why not buy something cheap to try the commute.
I searched the classifieds for what was to be my cheapest purchase yet. It was quite freeing just looking for something cheap, which started on most days. I bounced around the classifieds looking at all manner of cheap vehicles under £600.
I then started turning my attention to more barge like cars, thinking who cares about the fuel if it’s for a short time. Seriously considering a rather large Lexus V8 for £650. I then noticed the odd 5 series, some with an impressive 300k on the clock. I’m definitely more of a Jag lover (though have yet to own one) but can’t help but love the way Bmw’s drive.
Then popped S603 UHK, a lovely grey 1998 528i SE 133k with the desirable manual gearbox, taxed and 11 months Mot. A dealer had her in part ex and wanted rid at trade price. £750. The looked ideal in the pictures and the service history sounded great.
There was little hesitation; I have never jogged so hard to make sure I caught the train connection out to High Wycombe before the garage closed on the Friday. The car drove well on the test drive but a wheel bearing was definitely crying out. I tried to barter the price with this point. No such luck but still a great deal.
I’ve had her for around 6 weeks now. Driving 500 miles per week and a trip up to Newcastle. It drives great, lovely engine. A great cruiser.
She has the original tape player and no CD so I purchased a selection of tapes. It features dark blue velour with matching interior trim and a touch of wood. I like the originality of the car, the SE spec slips under the radar and the engine manages 30+ mpg on the commute.
I plan to keep her original and in good order.

Really like that - especially the plan to keep it original (hope you have a good source of cassettes). I remember the the first one of those I ever saw on a motorway in the South of France - ice green metallic with the same wheels as yours - quite understated but at the same time just looked fantastic. Best of luck with it.
