I have a rr vogue a comfortable kit owned because of the new arrivals. Sadly it replaced a 996. I am looking at an RS6 Avant because it offers speed and space., a good combo of the 996 and the RR. Just wanted some feedback from an owner...are they a good buy? From a practical point of view, 3 young kids with kit etc., any comments? Are they reliable?

I Recently sold a Skyline GTR for a 460 BHP RS4, which is not a million miles away from what you are doing. Think the RS4, although fast as hell in a straight line,is completely soul-less. I am no expert in the 996 dept but sufficient to say that the idea of a really quick estate car had a huge appeal. As it is I am already thinking of changing it after 8 months, the shortest I have owned a car, as it leaves me cold. I would be just as happy in an A4 TDI with a GT3 for the weekend...or a 996 c4 every day....
Its been a rude shock to find that not all fast cars are the same....some stir the soul and some don't.
If you are on this site I think, by my experiences, you should really do your homework. If you have aleady made the move I would love to hear what you think.
Rgds,
Max.

I've done the deed. I picked up a June '03,low mileage, Avus silver, black leather RS6 Avant last Friday. Have not realy had a chance to open it up, but a few initial observations:
1. The power is great. Kick down in sport mode is
very dramatic. 996 tip box seemed lighter and more
agile. You can feel the weight of this thing
particularly when breaking. Great engine sound.
2. Solid interior build quality. No rattles, smells
good, good ergonomics, Miss Digital sound Package
of 996. Audi sound system seems too bog standard.
(Sat nav..not yet bothered how to use it)
3. Does not like town 'stop-start' driving...Drinks
petrol as bad as the RR.
4. Surprised at the numbers of bikers giving
approving thumbs up signs!
5. Teutonic lines hide its potential, I like its
discreteness. V subtle. Perhaps this is one of its
appealing characteristics. It's simply enough to
know that those who know what the red and silver
badge means, know and those who don't, I am not
bothered.
6. Takes 2 child seats but will need to make room for
a 3rd arrival in December. Buying a cheap round
towner 7 seater estate this weekend. This will
take the family stresses and strains better.
7. Come to the conclusion the car's not a young
family run around! It's a wolf in sheep's
clothing.

I just need the time and weather to get it out in the open.

Question: Anyone seen Layer cake? I'd have expected more from the film makers with an RS6 Avant at their disposal. V. Dssapointing!. They should have done a 'Ronin'!

Sorry... only just seen this thread (note to self - look you old git).

Hope the RS works out for you. I'm still impressed as a daily drive - until one really thraps it... then the laws of physics jump in and remind you that you're in a tank.

Starting to miss a sports car and the two I have on order (of which I'll choose one) won't be in till 2006. Hmmm - trying not to look at the Caterham site after I've had a pint or two.

You'd think at some stage our "road safety experts", would recognise that a lot of the people picking up the points and driving bans are not those that are having the accidents.
