So its been a while since I bought something very complicated and broken.

Then the other day I found this while out working.





sorry for poor pics. This is how I found it looking sorry for its self.

The observant amongst you will notice that it looks a little low. There in lies the reason for it being abandoned. The active suspension is broken and merc quoted more than half the value of the car to fix.

Now im not afraid of such things and after a bit of haggling it was mine.

So jump leads attached and after nearly a year sitting there it fired up first turn of the key.

so now its sitting on my drive.

I really like these cars. I'm tempted by one myself but I'm scared of things like that happening which would soon bankrupt me.

Commendable bravery - the best of luck! I do like the looks of these, but I am scared of them.

This are fantastic cars, if you can fight off the bork they are tremendous creations. It's funny that barge buyers drop their knickers for hoary old stuff like the W124, yet these beautiful CL's go so unloved. They are magnificent. If I could sustain a reasonable war chest for the bork (or find a warranty that cover it) I'd love to have one on my drive.

So looking over the paper work. Mercedes have quoted just short of £1800 to fit a new pump.
iv had a quick look and the fluid appears to be leaking from the front seal.

now the pump is about £800 of that so that's a £1k to fit what is essentially a PAS pump. how hard can it be?

The only other fault I can find is the central locking/ soft close doors are not working at the min.

the body is very good cant wait to give it a good polish.
inside its near perfect. everything is electric and its all working.

If the car is spare I'd bet you could whip the pump off and get it fixed for waaaay less than a grand

There's a good reason we drop knickers for w124s - they are almost free to repair in comparison. The relative bork potential is incomparable, the w124 is like a pebble to the CL's boulder that seems to require pushing uphill. I still like the look of it though!

ive been doing some research this evening and as far I can see the pumps are not repairable.
I don't think Mercedes or the pump maker will make the parts available.

However I have found a 2004 car being broken local ish to me.

looks like a trip out tomorrow.

Chap used a company in Germany to rebuild his ABC pump for less than £300. If you are handy with the spanners you should be able to change it yourself.

This says ABS pump but is listed under Suspension pumps, might be worth giving them a call?

If it's not something simple like a fuse, check the wiring where it crosses from the body to the doors. Wires often split on these at that point leading to all sorts of issues.

Lovely car. Hope you can get the suspension sorted relatively cheaply. I bet thats a real motorway monster.

So today I went to notts and got a pump off a scrap car.
Got it back fitted it.

Suspension fixed. less than 2 hours god knows what Mercedes were quoting for.
took it in for an mot and 2 bulbs later its back on the road.

It needs a good valeting next.

I'll use it for a while. Make sure its all good then advertise it over the summer
