Alfa 145 Cloverleaf - Track Toy
Discussion
Ok I have some advice for anyone thinking of buying an old Alfa and thinking it makes them a petrol head, ignore Top Gear, it makes you in-f
king-sane, I currently have three of the dam things, a 166 V6 and another 145 that im looking after for a friend. The amount of welding these dam things seem to need is unreal. But it was free, so it would be rude not to keep it.
The basics, its a phase2 145 Cloverleaf with the 2.0 twin spark engine in. The chassis has some Italian tin worm in it, the gear box needs re built and the heater shat itself at some point. So its getting turned into my track / time attack toy.
For now the plan is weld up the chassis, cage it, do the Fiat Coupe 16v Turbo swap, coilovers etc and then go rag it on track.
Let battle commence ...
All three of them, two of them are still sat there and have not moved for a while.

The current 145 DD.

Strip down of the track toy starts

Primed

Painted

Getting read to removed the heater and the rest of the inside has been stripped.

Holes, lots of holes. The other side is the same.

All gutted.

All the sound deadening stripped out. This is what causes a lot of the rust on these as theres tabs under the floor and they let water under this and it causes the holes.

Lovely, why the 16v turbo as opposed to the 20v? Is it a weight or space issue?
Thanks, the little things have grown on me a lot. Space issues mainly weight also plays a part, to do the belts on the 20v its an engine out job. The 16v turbo is pretty much a drop in and it its more reliable for basic tuning than the 20v, you can run 300 ish without needing to uprate the parts. I plan to give it a basic re build and delete the balance shafts, have a better manifold fitted and refresh the turbo etc. I dont want crazy power out of it or the chassis will just not cope, plan is to create a nice little balanced car.Edited by lordf on Saturday 26th April 15:15
I can't understand why you painted the engine bay with the engine in if it's coming out?
The standard turbo is only good for 240 - 250 bhp max, even then:
They are known for crapping themselves when thrashed after being freed up with a de-cat, larger exhaust and increased boost pressure.
On track it will be practically spitting flames after a couple of laps because of it's (small size).
I hope you know what you are letting yourself in for and it goes well for you, most of these conversions never make it as people underestimate the amount of work and more importantly the large amount of money involved to make it a success.
