£160 Audi 80! Shedding at it's finest!

I was in the right place at the right time and couldn't let it go for scrap, she's a little smokey when cold but drives well, not a spot of rust, is straight as a straight thing and I came with 8 months mot and 2 months tax! Seeing as it's become clear my MG isn't a very good daily car I thought I'd give it a brake and revel in some German bargain!

I was driven to school in a flat red 1.8 80, I remember that 'clunk' of the doors more than anything else. Stupendously well built compared to future Audis

My grandad had a flat-red 1.8 model (F reg) when I was younger. The things I remember is the blue tint across the top of the windscreen and the headphone socket on the parcel shelf.

I had one of these - 2.0 Auto and it was indeed a brilliantly bolted together car it was also extremely slow as the weedy engine and auto box combination killed performance. Well done for getting a good looking bargain.

Don't!

Today Audis, BMWs and Merc are more or less the same. Back in the 80s and early 90s they were not. The Audi 80 was a high quality completely non sporting car (in standard form) and all the better for it!

The only way to do it properly on these is with coil-overs, I think only FK make them and they are ~£700.

We lowered ours with 60mm springs, but on 16/17's it was never that low and the ride was awful.

Straight, tight and 100% rust free! owned by a guy who restores morris minors for the last 10 years, plan is to refresh the engine, full head set, cam belt, water pump and a service and i can't see why she won't soldier on!

Bargain. The build quality of Audis of that age is quite something. Shame about silliness like two different metals in the plumbing for the rear discs on some reacting and making replacement a bit more than it should be.

Are we talking the caliper or brake pipes? How does the problem manifest itself?

Caliper problems, they can stick on. I just bought a replacement set for mine. The pipes are a mare to do due to the run they have around the rear arms. I did mine one cold February under axle stands when they failed the MOT. Make sure you also have a piston winding kit to push the piston back properly, otherwise replacement pads can be a test.

Ah, just had a look, they're mk2 golf calipers, there is a solution, you can use mk4 golf calipers and Goodrich do a conversion pipe. Think veedubmachine used to sell everything needed for £110.
