A very unusual choice 
I ran a 320i xDrive for a couple of weeks and never really got on with the engine but I'm sure in the higher state of tune it'll be a lot better. The rest of the car was great though, except the steering lock which was cataclysmicly terrible, but I believe that is the 4x4 that does it and the RWD ones are better.

ETA: Just had a google of these, 150mph, 240bhp and 40+mpg?! perfect! I hope in 10 -15 years I'll be able to pick up a rough one for £1000, like an e36 328i?

I've had my eye on one of these for a while but was hoping to buy nearly new but they seem to be rare as hens teeth. I wondered if it might be a bit tail happy?which I'd like but the Mrs drives the car too so perhaps the S4 might be safer for her. Will be interested to hear your thoughts and look forward to reading your report

These will not be tail happy at all, the electronic systems come in very early and keep everything under control. I have an E92 330i (circa 270bhp) and with the ESP and TC on it is near impossible to get into a bad situation even driving v. quickly in the wet. Nice.
If it's any help, I have that same engine in my E89 Z4 and it really is a great engine to use on a day to day basis. It pulls from about 1250rpm all the way to the redline.
It's pretty frugal as well. I'm seeing 35-38mpg on an average blast. If you drive sensibly, you can get 40mpg+ on the motorway without any real problems.
The only real problem is that it sounds a bit "tappety" but that's just the injectors and it seems to quieten down once it's warm.
And, only £180 a year to tax.
