MX5 v TT

Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a car to use at evenings and weekends (i.e. not commuting) and was planning on spending around £3-5k. As most of my friends are having babies, I'm enjoying what remains of my youth, and am after a 2 seater.

At the moment it's a toss up between the MX5 and the TT.

I've read many comments on both cars - consensus seems to be that the MX5 is a great car, whereas the TT seems to come under a fair bit of flack (servicing costs, new tyres etc). My main concern is that at my price range, most cars will have done in excess of 50,000 miles, and ideally I don't want to be hit with servicing charges a few months down the line...

Would be great to know what peoples' thoughts are on choosing between these cars

Mx5 should be more fun to drive and cheaper to own. Also consider the mk3 mr2.

Out of the 2 I'd go for the mx5 if you want a fun sports car.

Is a vx220 or of the question? £7k. Maybe cheaper if you are happy with a cat d car.

50k miles on an MX5 is barely run in, and running costs are lower than most cars.

The TT might be a better option if you like shopping and showing off a German badge, but if you enjoy driving then go for the MX5.

MX5, I've had three. Such fun cars. Just check for rust on the sills and rear arches.

Ah but the question is, which MX-5?

For that budget, you'll be looking for a mk3. Also consider a mk3 MR2, drive them both and see which you prefer?

One concern I do have is the size of the boot - has this been a big problem for MX5 owners? ie is there enough space for a suitcase or 2 if I wanted to go with the gf for a weekend away?

I used to fit one of them small suitecases with the pull out handles in the boots on my mk3 MX5. Dont even bother looking at the MR2 if you want luggage space.

You do have to think about how you pack, but its surprising how much you can actually fit in there when you try.

As roadsters go, the boot is huge,including a space saver tire.
Don't pack suit cases, soft bags are the best idea, you get tons in, and you got the little shelf behind the seats.
Roof up or down don't make any difference to the boot, as the roof don't go in it.

I used to go driving around France carrying full camping kit for 2 people in my mk1 MX5. You can fit quite a bit in them.

seeing as most people will never actually have driven both cars i think the best thing to do would be to test drive them both and see which you prefer, you are the one that is laying out the cash after all. it should be your choice, no one elses (in my opinion)
