Porsche 944

I set my heart on a 944 a few months ago purely as I fancied a change (having run mk2 MR2s for the last few years) and the 944 ticked all the boxes. I've always loved the looks since I was a nipper.

I had no real preference in terms of model / spec, but decided to put my efforts into finding a well loved car with history. As anyone who has looked for a 944 will know, there are plenty of rough cars out there. I looked at such a car, then missed out on a very nice late S1. Although I love looking through the classifieds, it was now starting to wear a little in terms of the 944 search. But then the car I have now bought popped up just 20 miles away. I arranged a viewing which identified the car as every bit as good as it looked and sounded in the advert. Same owner for 7 years, full history from day one and an owner who clearly had a passion for the car (selling as upgrading). The car was due cam/balance belts etc which was a shame as everything else checked out. Anyway, to bring this story up to date, the seller got all the work done and a price was agreed. I picked it up in the week and so far so good

The car is a late S2 so has the 3l 4 pot unit. It pulls very nicely and is a step up from the MR2 in the torque department 121k miles with full history. It's currently running on a set of Boxster wheels, these might stay or might go, not sure yet.

The boxster rims look good but in my opinion slow down the car and make it handle all wrong. We run these on the race car not sure what they are called but best of both worlds

Blimey that looks spotless, great choice. A mate at work has just sold his in exactly the same sort of spec as this except black, and inherited his dad's Focus diesel as he needs something 'sensible'. Fool!

I take it your MR2 wasn't a Mk2 turbo?

Still, very nice, very tidy car. I rather like the wheels -- perhaps keep those and get a set of stock ones for summer/Porsche purist fests?

Nope, not a turbo. I've driven an MR2 turbo on a number of occasions as my bro used to have one. Properly quick cars and I think you would struggle to beat the performance for the money! I fancied a changed however after 5 years of MR2s, glad I stuck with my plan and found a 944

Will give the wheels a chance and then make up my mind. Good shout re picking up a set of D90s for the occasional swap over Might be a plan

Having had the 944 for about 3 months now I thought a quick update might be in order

I've covered about 1,500 miles in since I bought it and its been a joy (apart from a minor blip that I'll come to in a mo). I've just been enjoying getting to know the car and I'm pretty much at the stage where I trust it I've had it sitting in traffic in the city, cruising down the motorway and also on a couple of A-road blasts, all of which has not phased it

The only blip was a couple of weeks into ownership. It cut out on me a couple of times while sitting in traffic and refused to start until it had cooled down. The issue was traced by an auto electrician to a partially blocked fuel filter causing the fuel pump relay to overheat - fitted a new fuel filter and it has not missed a beat since!

Other things I've done include getting a new exhaust tail section fabricated as it was rotten where the tail section meets the rear silencer. I've replaced the rear hatch pins as I was getting a whiff of exhaust fumes in the cabin, sorted the issue a treat. I've also spent some time on the exterior, getting a nice layer of wax on the paint work (the car lives outside). Next on the list is a new stereo / speakers and also I'm going to look into a replacement steering wheel - something slightly smaller and chunkier, any recommendations?

Driving wise I'm loving life with the 944. Initially it felt very different than my previous car (Mk2 Toyota MR2), but the more time I spend in it the more I feel at home. Things like pulling away from a standstill took a little more sympathy what with a closer clutch bite point and a heavy / stiff accelerator. I also found myself grabbing for a non existent handbrake in the centre of the car (seems to be the other way round now when I drive any other car, I'm grabbing down the side of the seat ). I love love love the way it gets down the road (sorry, I sound like Mike Brewer now), pulling up a slip road or down a nice clear A-Road is a joy, pulls very cleanly and would leave my MR2 behind easily!

Nearly bought one off PH a few months ago, but got stiffed by the seller. Arranged to buy given that I offered to pay asking price 3 hrs after he advertised it and he sold it to someone else because he couldn't wait. 2 days for me to collect. Meh.
