Who was it that said you aren't a real petrol head unless you've owned an Alfa?

Picked up this little runaround on Tuesday.

It's a 2003, 2.0 Twinspark Lusso. Done 70,000 miles. Full service history. Cambelt done at 50,000 miles. MOT until end of Jan. In pretty good condition.

I've already replaced a broken sidelight bulb. Got some oil and a filter from ECP and plan to change the oil at the weekend. A previous owner has fitted a K&N cone filter. I might pair that up with a decent stainless steel exhaust although the one on the car has only recently been fitted.

I plan on putting new discs and pads on the car. Also ordered some new front and rear badges from Ebay. Put a bid on some GTA wheels on another forum too. Nothing much more planned for now...

These are bargains because of all the scare stories which seem to be exaggerated with the 147

My mate said before you put on new badges on Alfa give them a few coats of clear coat varnish or polyurethane apparently it stops them fading.

Nice car mate! Red seats look good, although probably too bold for me hehe

In my 156 the sidelight bulbs used to blow for fun, they would only last a few months. It was caused by the bulb fitting being loose which meant that it would make and loose connection over and over until it blew. This was fixed simply by squeezing the metal that held the bulb to hold it more tightly!

You say the cambelt was done 20,000mi ago. Depending on how much mileage the car has done per year it may be nearly due again. They should be changed every 3 years or 36,000 miles!

On my car due to fairly high mileage by me, and a couple of non-ideal failures (water pump etc) i ended up replacing the cambelt 3 times in the 4-5 years i had the car.

Love the red leather! Nearly bought a 147 when I was 17, decided a 206 was a much better option banghead live and learn!

Enjoy the car, and hope their reputation doesn't bring you too many stops by the side of the road!

The main UK Alfa forum is a wealth if good information.

I've priced up a cambelt change with a local specialist based in Sale. They've quoted £420 including VAT for the change including all the tensioners, the secondary belt for the cam variator, fan belt and water pump which seems to be a decent price.

That seems a decent price for a TS cambelt job.

Are you getting the water pump replaced at the same time ?

I'm sure that quote included the water pump but can't remember 100%. The garage called me with the quote when I was on the treadmill in the gym.

He said if I needed the cam variator, it was an extra £80 or something.

If you can make it up to Royston (Hertfordshire) I can thoroughly recommend alfa workshop. They are truly excellent and very well priced. Cambelt with all the associated gubbins for £300. They will do the belt and a full service for £430.

I doubt they would include the water pump on the TS engines, they are not known to fail (although mine did) unlike the v6's where they are a week point.

Honestly if you can make it to alfa workshop it's worth it, I used to make the 3 hour round trip to use them. In fact I'm gutted I have sold the alfa now because I am going to have to use another garage!

I had a good look at their website and they seem to be very knowledgeable and share a lot on information on there. I'm based in Manchester and a 3.5 hour drive down there is just too much. Good value service though.
