In a moment of eBay madness I bid for and won a Sinclair C5. I have always been fond of unusual oddities (see my car history) but the C5 is a new low, even for me. I had little knowledge of these things and never actually seen one in the flesh but on a sunday evening browsing eBay it seemed to make sense. This particular C5 was clearly in need of some attention and perfect as a winter project, or so was my reasoning.

I picked it up on tuesday in Leeds with the help of my father. The first thing to strike me was that it was absolutely filthy as can be seen in the pictures from the eBay ad. So filthy in fact that I couldn't actually bring myself to sit in it!. Upon getting it home it transpired that the steering was connected backwards which made for a hairy moment in a flower bed when I did attempt to ride (drive?) it. Three days later I have cleaned it thoroughly and reconnected the steering. I have bought a new battery but there is no power to the motor. I have pedalled it around the block to the amusement of the neighbours.

The plan is to make it work under it's own power and then I'm not sure. I may keep it as a bit of a novelty, we'll see!

Kamil on this forum has bought a couple of them and has a 15-page thread somewhere - might be good for some background reading!

How much did it set you back?

There was a guy near me who had one when they came out, I always remember wincing when I saw him on the road in it near the bus.

I like them in a kind of they are utter rubbish but in a cool way; if you know what I mean.
