It's amazing how much the look of engines has changed, I'll try to explain in pictures...
Eunos 1.6. You can see everything, the rocker cover has cool things cast into it, DOHC 16v

E36 M3, still looks good but the M Power is just a plastic cover

E46 330d, lots of plastic.

Fabia VRS..nothing to see here

So are there any good looking engines left?
Let's see what you've got.

The Jaguar straight six in my XJ40 Jaguar Sovereign is a beautiful looking engine. With its use of polished aluminium and stainless steel together with black enamel, in my view it's the last classically styled six Jaguar made. They're smooth, powerful, economical and very long lived. The AJ6 is very underestimated.

BMW E91: not much to look at, just a cheap plastic cover. The straight six in the BMW E91 is a very smooth engine indeed - smoother than the Jaguar's, but with nothing like as much character. The Jaguar is generally quieter than the BMW with much less road noise, but its engine is louder. The Jag roars when it is opened up, rising to a hollow yowl at high revs. The BMW sounds a bit like a hairdryer.
