Mazda 6 Tourer 2.2D SE-L Nav

Just picked this up as a family/company motor to replace an aging Mondeo Hatchback 2.0 TDCI Edge. I had looked at equivalent spec Mondeo's and Passats but I spotted this Mazda and was taken in by its looks.
It's a 2.2D with 148bhp and 280ft/lb torque so it's never going to set the world on fire, but it pulls well and full torque is available between 1800rpm and 3500rpm. More importantly, for a company car, is emissions and this produces 110kg which considering a Prius produces 99kg, is pretty amazing. Results in a small saving per month in tax while still maintaining similar performance to the previous Mondeo.
It seems well made with doors clunking in a Germanic fashion, materials feel good and the interior is a comfy, well laid out place. Well equipped with front/rear parking sensors, sat nav, USB, climate, keyless etc etc etc. Has some badly named technology as park of the Skyactiv stuff, I-Stop and I-Eloop (seriously). I-stop is apparently the worlds fastest stop/start system and i-eloop is regenerative braking which stores power in capacitors to power all the electric gubbins, rather then using the alternator which puts a drain on the engine. Sounds clever, will see what its like in reality.
All in all, should make for a good company car to cover distance as well as safe and big enough for the family.

Excellent choice, I have looked at these as well and I think Mazda's redesigned range is very attractive indeed...I think we'll be seeing much more of Mazda on UK roads in the next couple of years. The new 3 fastback and Mazda 6 saloon are also very tempting, along with Mazda's 0% APR deals. (Now I'm starting to sound like a Mazda salesman !!...so I'll stop).
Despite few people probably being interested, thought I'd still update this as I've had the car nearly a week and covered around 1300 mile in it.
So on Monday I left Derby at 6am and headed up to Fort William, around a 400 mile trip so good chance to get accustomed to the car. Initial thoughts were, definitely a firmer ride then my previous Mondeo. At pre-motorway speeds you can tell the difference but motorway speeds there's little difference. To be honest though, it still rides better then an S Line Audi or M Sport BMW. While I'm talking about suspension, handling needs to be mentioned. I've had some pretty decent hot hatches before but this big bus doesn't half corner well. It corners extremely flat and there's seemingly endless grip, certainly much much flatter then the Mondeo. Steering feel is odd, loads up artificially but its pointy and quite fun to steer through some country lanes.
The engine is, quite frankly, superb. It's extremely quiet, making a muted rumble when you rev it but never being intrusive. Cruising around its silent and I mean, silent. There's no lag which is probably due to it being twin scroll turbo. It feels no quicker then my Mondeo, despite being lighter and 10bhp up but it has immense torque, in any gear, at any speed. Feels quite responsive and willing to press on. Fuel economy saw 60mpg average on the 400 mile up to Fort William, the same trip saw 50mpg in the Mondeo.
Stop/start system is barely noticeable, apparently the worlds fastest as it knows the exact position of the pistons when it switches off. Its certainly quick to restart and doesn't rattle the cabin on restart like some other systems I've tried.
There are some features lacking, which I find odd on a near top of the range car, which Mazda is pushing as a premium product and selling for 25k. Firstly, there is no boot light in the tourer but you can get one from Mazda parts for £35 + VAT, then you need to fit it. Seriously, 25k and no boot light. It has electric mirrors, but you cannot set them to auto fold in, you have to twiddle a knob. There's no coming home light function, depsite it having auto lights. There's no auto door locking after a certain speed but you can change how long the doors automatically lock if you forget to lock the car (10 minutes, 30 minutes?). These are all minor points to be honest though and hardly deal breakers.
All in all, this feels like a quality product which is ideal for lugging the family but not completely devoid of fun. Wife can drive it and even the mother in law loves it!

You're right about the steering feeling odd, but only to start with you soon get used to it. there are a few niggles like the gfuide home and miorrors but I can live with these as i didn't want to pay the ford equivalent price. Plus my local ford dealer are s

te! The mazda garage was a lot better.I think these are great looking cars. I have the previous generation 2.2 185bhp sport which i've really enjoyed over the last couple of years with two exceptions - the turning circle & the 12.5k service intervals.
Other niggles (lack of follow me home lights (had these on a previous car) and the fact that the interior lights don't come on when you switch off at night).

I have one too - same colour as yours, but a 2.0 165 PS (Petrol) Sport Nav.
Decent car, had mine since Summer 2013.
I had the 2.2d Sport 185PS of the last shape 6 beforehand, big fan of that engine. Went really well, though was worse on fuel than the current Petrol one...
They do handle well, and are brilliant Cruisers - we did a European road tour last year in it, and didn't find a few hours a day driving tiring atall, or uncomfortable.
I kind of wish I had gone for the 2.2d again, but the prices for the Sport weren't overly flexible when I got mine as they hadn't been out for long by then. Petrol version is fine, but needs working hard to get the most out of it...

Very handsome car and it looks great in that colour. These must be the best value large estate cars out there at the moment.
The only gripe I have is that the navigation system doesn't seem to integrate particularly well into the dash. A bit 'aftermarket' but that's no big deal since the car is such good value.

That's about to change... The facelift is due very soon, which uses the MZD connect system from the Mazda3 requiring a complete redesign of the Dashboard and will also have the addition of DAB - it's also gaining all LED lighting on the high grade cars and a higher spec'd interior (think more leather instead of plastic) oh and an electric handbrakeThe only gripe I have is that the navigation system doesn't seem to integrate particularly well into the dash. They look fabulous, get great reviews for driving dynamics, the stats are great on paper, what is not to like? The Tourers look seriously good in Sport spec in Soul Red.

I recently got the 175 Auto Sport Nav Tourer in Blue Reflex Mica for one of my sales team.
I borrowed it last week and was very impressed. It's looks great inside and out and really stands out amongst the other Euroboxes. The only thing that bugged me was that the screen in the dash on the right next to the speedo didn't work in conjunction with the infotainment screen. But that's a small gripe, the engine and ride were superb even on it's 19" wheels.

Another little update as I've covered another 1k in it this week so far.
I'd previously mentioned it not having a boot light, when in fact it does! I'd been searching all over in the boot for a light, when it is actually on the inside of the boot itself! Turned it on and lights up the boot perfectly.
On my recent trek this week, I'd had the pleasure of some very quiet, open country roads so I could explore its dynamics a little more. Handling really is superb for a family estate, it keeps it line much tighter where as the Mondeo would tend to wash out a bit requiring additional steering input. Corners without roll and is genuinely a bit fun. Steering itself I'm still not entirely convinced with, it just feels a little odd where as the Mondeo would inspire more confidence. Brakes also give up the ghost relatively easily, grumbling and fading without too much hard braking, however, its a family estate not a sports car!
I've also had a trip to a local country park, complete with a double width pushchair, my wife and 2 kids plus all the gubbins kids bring with them. Boot still had plenty of room, my 2 year old loves the sat nav screen and just points at it from the back seat.
With the 1k this week, the current average MPG is 60 which I find impressive for a car of this size that's not a 1.6 TDCI Ecobox.
So its proved itself as a competent family motor, decent at motorway cruising and fun when I'm on my own. All of this and its costing me less in tax per month, whats not to like?
