The old girl has been hibernating overr the winter. The garage needed a tidy up so I put the battery on charge overnight and, as usual, she started first time and came out for some fresh air.

25 years old this year, this was Mrs Locals daily driver for a few years but then we got her something newer and I inherited the Mazda.

It's an object lesson in trackday modifying on a budget. It's a 1.6 with no performance modifications other than a little air filter. I've concentrated on reducing weight and improving braking and handling. I stripped out the air conditioning, spare wheel, boot lining etc. fitted uprated brake discs and yellow stuff pads and changed the brake fluid for the super blue stuff.

A strut brace and a set of second-hand coilovers firmed up the cornering and I stuck a roll-bar and bucket seat in for much cheapness from ebay. The cheap steering wheel allows much easier heel/toe as do the cheapo pedals which I covered with skateboard grip tape.

Its sitting on it's road wheels and ditchfinders for storage, but I have a second set of wheels fitted with Yokohama A048s which are an absolute revelation on a dry track.

And the white spots? Because race car. The spots are worth at least 2 seconds a lap.

Probably.

It needs a little welding on the offside sill for its MOT so it might not go back on the road until next year - we'll see how things go.

Definitely not a concourse car! Every panel is a slightly different shade of red, and despite usually being the slowest car at most track days, it's an absolute hoot and requires minimal - and very cheap - maintenance. Drive it to a track day, thrash it to within an inch of its life all day, drive it home, stick it in the garage, come back to it two months later and it'll start first time and be raring to go again!
