Replacement family hack. Kind of sleeper?? Ok it's a golf.

I've had a run of bad luck with my previous two cars coming to an economically premature end. I was determined to stay shedding for now as the kids are still young and the car is generally in a poor uncared state most of the time.
This was actually the first car I went to look at which is rare for me. I wanted an estate, the wife wasn't keen on anything too big so the golf fitted the bill. I've never had a diesel and we only do 5-6k a year so I'm not that worried about MPG. This makes it tricky as petrol cars are actually getting hard to find unless your looking for a very small car. The chap selling was local so I nipped down for a test drive. To be fair I couldn't spot anything mechanically wrong, good tyres, fsh, most of the mot's with a fresh one on it. I ended up paying the asking price.
This one has the 1.8 turbo which I believe is quite rare in the estate. 2003 so last of the mk4, pretty nicely specced with climate, sunroof, lumbar seats, auto dimming mirror and the bbs wheels. The car has done 70k miles with just three owners.
I'm really hoping it will prove reliable. It seems to go extremely well. I'd say it's pace far out performers its handling which I may look to improve if it behaves. Also no knocks or rattles which these cars always seem to suffer. The only mk4's I've driven were Gti's with the bigger wheels and low profile tyres, so this was a pleasant surprise. The 16" wheels and big tyres make it feel very refined.
Not particularly exciting. But for a family run about I think it looks quite classy on the bbs wheels and the nice pearl paint.

Thanks, yes the wheels are mint. I presume they must be refurbed. The body has no parking dings and is very good but the rear bumper is a bit scuffed where things get loaded into the boot. Could do with a cover over the top part. I just noticed it has mudflaps which may be why the paintwork on the lower sides is so good.Good find with the Montreals, and 1.8t.

Nice, I have a passat 1.8t waiting for me to possibly break it, it's a lovely engine, and you can get a LOT of power out of them with a remap, shame about the rest of the car being broken. Bit of a shame, as it's a nice car otherwise. Bit of a barge though in terms of handling, like you say!
