picked up the new family wagon last night, pretty chuffed overall. 119k, but it has the most paperwork I have ever seen with a car. All major issues done, plus previous owner had spent £700 at the MOT in May, and £600 on a full service in Sept 14. Everything works . No major plans apart from wheels refurbished, and fitting some HIDs. It needs a polish as paint is rough with tree sap etc. will put a photo up soon as I seem to unable to resize the only photo I have.

Couple of pics of my new wagon, it is certainly not a performance machine, but it's a comfortable and smooth drive. What are people's thoughts on wheel colour choice, it's going in for wheel refurbishment next week, and I normally always go factory colours, but I am thinking gun grey, any one done similar?

To answer the "what could possibly go wrong" question, the air suspension. That's about it though, that aside they're pretty tough old things.
I reckon a gunmetal might suit it well for the wheels. Always had a bit of a soft spot for Allroads, particularly the rare V8 and 2.7 Biturbo ones.

I may be a little biased but I think these are some of the best all-rounders in the modern automotive world! Capable, spacious and very well built!

What engine is in yours? The 2.5TDi is the tamest in the range but you can still see decent gains with a remap. I have the 2.7TT in mine, which is a very odd pairing as the body suggests mountaineering but the engine is performance oriented - very Jekyll and Hyde!

What can go wrong? In real terms, not a great deal more than the usual stuff - I've replaced hoses, suspension arms and other regular maintenance bits in my year of ownership, but the air suspension and engine are both holding up perfectly (touch wood trim!). A good service history and regular intervals are a must with these.

Go gunmetal / anthracite with the refurb, and check out my thread for more general info on ownership:

Cheers guys, I have to say I am enjoying the car, probably because it's so easy to cruise about in. The steering is nice and light, and the seats are very comfy, ( would have liked the Recaro's tho) I have the 2.5 tdi which actually is quicker off the mark than I had expected, but it's lacking a bit at the top end, the 330d was a lot quicker. The interior on it is in very good condition, and as mentioned the seats show very little wear, I will get photos up once wheels and lights have been done. I think Gun Grey will suit the car,

Looks great, looks like its a slightly later model with the colour coded arches (unless this was an option?)

It's a May 05, so probably one of the last made. Strange spec though, no xenons? But nav plus etc. needs a good polish, not got the time with new arrival.

I don't think many had xenon's, I had a look a while back when a mate was looking for one.

Xenons were very rare, at least on the diesels- I think my dad managed to get one of the few with both Xenons and Recaros as they were both top choice options for him and it took him about 6 months to find a car. The colour coding was a factory option I think, he bought in mid-2003 and several of the ones we looked at were colour coded.

Can anyone comment what these Allroads (particularly the diesel) are like as a tow car? I'm trying to find a well priced all rounder that will happily pull the race car around (around 1600kg with trailer) and keep finding myself coming back to these....

I have only ever had factory xenons in my last 4 cars, so going for the HIDs, hoping it will not look too out of place. I have seen some HID kits that blind you, and just don't look right. My one has a tow bar and had been used to tow a speed boat, but no idea what the total weight would have been.

The only thing on the car that I can't get working it the Nokia hands free, it seems to have power and the buttons respond, also my phone has paired with it, but when I answer a call it does come through the loudspeaker but just on my phone? And when I hang up the radio does not come back on, as if it's stuck on phone mode? I do not have instruction manual with it so have looked online but no ideas as of yet.

Pretty sure the HIDs on these are identical to those on the normal A6 so a swap wouldn't be too hard.

a tensioner for the diesel pump sheared off on mine which meant no worky. Also check to see if the drain hole under the battery is clogged, if it is, when it rains or you wash it you will get a footwell full of water!
Sold mine last month.

I did think about getting a set of factory lights, however it appears they go for £300 a unit. HIDs being done for a lot less, so going down that route.

HIDs fitted and they look OEM, as Audi have spherical bulb casing if that makes sense, wheels done as well, so pretty chuffed for now, Service due in a few hundred miles.
