1993 AUDI 100 S4

I recently bought this here in Australia. It is a pretty rare car - a 1993 100 S4 (also known as a UR-S4). I bought it from a dealer 600 miles away so I wasn't able to view it in person. It arrived on a truck a few days ago but I haven't been able to drive it much yet as it is not currently registered. I did drive it to a local testing station around the corner for inspection but unfortunately it failed on inoperative brake lights. Otherwise all was good so I just need to fit a new brake light switch (I hope).

Apparently the car belonged to an older gent who sadly had to sell his car collection due to failing eyesight. It came with a boot full of new spares including front and rear brake discs he got from an Audi dealer who were clearing-out old stock. I also found the original amber front indicators in the boot. Any thoughts about clear vs amber? So far I am pleased with my purchase. The dealer seems to have described it honestly. It is certainly not perfect but looks to have been well loved over its 100,000 miles and has a good service history.

My plans are to first get it registered so I can actually drive it! I then can assess what needs to be done. It is due a service and needs a good detail. It also has horrible bubbling, peeling window tint which I'm sure will be a nightmare to remove. I plan to keep this thread updated with my progress. I was looking for a small project that doesn't need major work, just some detailing and fettling. Hopefully this should fit the bill...

The mostly forgotten Procon-Ten safety system. It used steel cables to tension the seat belts and pull the steering wheel and engine away from you in a frontal collision.

I thought it was time I updated this thread...

The big news is the car is now road legal after I replaced the faulty brake light switch. Other than that I have been spending many hours cleaning the interior and removing the horrible old window tint which had bubbled and turned purple. Actually it was a much easier job than I suspected. After doing some research online I bought a small hand-held steam cleaner and used this to soften the adhesive which made the job much easier. On most of the windows the tint came off in one piece. I then used the steamer again to soften any remaining glue before removing it with a razor blade.

The next job was to clean and condition the leather. I used Leatherique with good results. The procedure is the reverse of most products in that you FIRST apply the conditioning oil and leave it soak in. You then spray on the cleaning solution and work it in with a soft brush before wiping it off with a damp cloth.

This is how dirty the cloth was after wiping just the driver's seat base. Leatherique recommend more than one application so I plan to repeat the whole procedure again. It is time consuming but the results are superior to other products I have used in the past.

I have been driving the car sparingly as it is three years since it was last serviced (it has only travelled 2000 miles in that time). In two days the car is booked in with the mechanic for a service and inspection. So far my to-do list includes:

Major service including all fluids
Clutch pedal feels quite sticky
Creaking/clunking from the rear end somewhere

Other than that it drives pretty well. I think it has the potential to be a really nice car...
