E46 325i - fix engine?
Discussion
So, I bought a 2002 BMW 325i twelve months ago which had done 69k. I quickly realised it was using a litre of oil every 450-500 miles. First step was get CCV changed, didn't solve anything. Slowly oil consumption increased and now at 88k it's doing only 220 miles to a litre of oil....!
Clearly the engine is knackered, but it's one of those cars I've just bonded with - it's sat on the drive and I just can't entertain the thought of getting rid. Especially as it's in good nick externally. Morally I couldn't sell it without mentioning the oil issue, so I won't get much for it spares/repair and I'd need to spend 3k to get similar condition. Which then makes the man maths of fixing it stack up....(sort of)
And now I don't really know what to do next- my local bm Indy weren't interested and just said get rid. And any engine places only take engines minus the car.
Please convince me I'm right to keep it and suggest places that can help! (I'm in Manchester).
Cheers

Assuming it is burning it and not leaking it'd be helpful to know the source of the leak. Does it smoke? If so, when? Generally, smoking under heavy load suggests rings are dead, smoke on overrun or startup and it's probably valve stems. Get a compression test to see whether the bores/rings are knackered, if they are it's open heart surgery to fix - replacement engine would be cheaper. If it's the valve stem seals its not such a disaster as I you should be able to change them without pulling the head.
Or, cheap option is to put some thicker oil in it and keep topping it up.

Sorry, should have added:
1. Small leaks from oil filter housing gasket and valve cover gasket
2. Confident it's burning, but not noticed any real pattern.
3. Went from 5w30 to 5w40 and didn't make any difference
4. A photo
I was planning on compression test, but figured it made sense to get this done somewhere that has the expertise to actually fix it after test
