My First Ovlov And My First "Bomb Site" Dealer Purchase

WE have 2 electric cars a leaf and a zoe (sorry no Tesla content), we also had a Infinity 4*4 but as I had temporary use of a Tiguan for 3 months I sold it as it just wasn't being used.
Fast forward 3 months and the Tiguan goes back (as a 100 mile a day commuter it was superb 2.0 D) so we need a fossil fuel car which will be the 4th car for the 2 of us when the Mustang arrives in January.
I started off loving the thought of a banger but the reality of bangernomics for a mechanical retard is that its not a good idea. Whilst I understand stuff my brain isnt wired to actually do it.
So, many nights eagerly scanning the trader and PH chopping and changing, my rules were £5k, 10 years old and under 100 with heated leather and if possible nav. V70`s came up and I read up on them with some sage beardy advice coming through the forum of "check the clocks for silver rings" "check the belts have been done" and check the stereo. OK but then the typical dealer for said car at said age is not housed in a gin palace with endless coffee its a portakabin on a flat rubbly site (or worse).
I am paranoid about "hassle" and just hate car related stress so I looked for local Volvo specialists and found 2 highly rated ones within 2 miles! (Graham Wrighton and Drayton) - I am ok for spanner work lets go after a Volvo V70.
We live in a incline so the V70 changed to a XC70, a MK2 turned to a MK3 and the budget was up to £10k - NO just not needed back off brain, wallet is in control. I saw 2 in a day, 2008 XC70 with "engine service needed" lit up, was a great deal BUT my paranoia crept in, what if they just turn it off / mask it off and dont fix the issue I then have car related stress that I dont like, so off to a 2005 red one, the best thing about it was 4 scorpions on each corner the rest of it said "ruf" like a little doggy - no thanks. Nagging away at me was a silver £5k one in Liverpool that was a crap advert on trader but it appeared on PH with a far better advert and a elusive and crucial extra - CHILD BOOSTER SEATS! my near 6 year olds would love them. Alas the minute the advert hit PH it was sold and I was fed up.
I flirted with other cars, a CRV exec, a 330D estate, and a few saabs, around her we have a truly excellent Audi and Saab dealer who I really want to buy a car from but the A6 avants were at £7900 just too far over budget and as no more Volvos appeared I went 9-5 estate hunting. The nearest one was this
and I HPI`d it and checked the dealer out, they had some nice metal at the lower end and I spotted the Saab, a XC90 under prep and and and a XC70
OK so if I drive to Preston (an hour) I will buy one of 3 cars BUT how do I get it home, do I pay and leave it, its a portakabin I am out of my comfort zone, what if it blows up will they tell me to do one, should I get an inspection. My logical head said loads of PHers buy crap daily and its an adventure so get on with it. So I decided I was going up and would go back on saturday to collect it, "cant do Sat said Mrs DS footie, rugby and a party - sunday? - party and friends over. Hmm what to do plus I was reticent about paying and leaving it then I had an idea - get it delivered, I called the dealer do you deliver? I asked eagerly - yes but not at the moment they said so I asked the local specialist if they could collect it and they gave me a guys number who was in Rainhill Liverpool he quoted £100 to trailor it to Wirral and to call him when I get there and he will set off - I get a new motor today no insurance of tax hassle!!!
I arrived at the "yard" - rubble, tick; portakabin, tick; portaloo, unexpected tick; well it was a text book used car dealer. I had called three times before setting off with nervy queries, has it got books and keys, does it need tyres etc and finally has it had a belt change - all were answered politely and promptly. So I jumped out of the Tiguan and spotted a silver Volvo ironically next to the Saab on the lot, I looked at the Saab first thinking it would be the runner up prize if the Volvo was a runt and the Saab was a great car a 2007 56 SAAB 9-5 2.0 AIRFLOW 5d AUTO for £3k it was well worth it so I was pleased that my journey would be fruitful, then nervously I glanced right to the boxy shape ed Volvo, no dings, looked honest, tyres - 1 scorpion, 2 scorpions yay 4 scorpions, seat condition A1, AC cold, stereo all works, brakes - new front discs, then the parcel shelf was there, the dog guard was present and whats this? a detached tow bar under the boot floor - it just gets better. However one last thing made this Ovlov mine - not mentioned in the advert was - CHILD BOOSTER SEATS with the void full of sweet wrappers. I was chuffed and bought the car on the spot.
I drove home and the car arrived 30 mins later on the trailor, he drove it off and its on the drive now - tomorrow I will tax and insure it and start to explore. It has the most buttons I have ever seen in front of the gearlever - this appeals to the 9 year old in me!

Great car and write up. Looks a bit tidier than mine. I've found scorpions a bit s
t tbh. Tempted to go back to my spare set of ultragrip 8s. I've a readers thread if interested.
Enjoy. They are excellent cars, I'm very likely to replace mine with another when time comes.

It's a late 2005 SE with no sunroof or nav but the nav is crap, the roof I can live without. It's lived in Cumbria all it's life and was oxd at Penrith who send old stuff to this dealer.
You just know when a car is right and this one is, we are on holiday for half term and the car will be in the specialists for gearbox oil (if it needs it) belts and a full check over inc handbrake, rear diff functionality will be tested and that's it, the service history is all main dealer apart from the last one and the only advisories have been tyres.
Were cleaning and exploring this afternoon if I can get the bugger insured I nay even drive it!!!

Sounds good. Your not missing anything with the Nav - I have a 2015 X60 and even that's rubbish. In terms of important stuff like ipod, I had one of these for my S80 - http://imiv.ca - it worked really well at getting good sound in to the system....

Don't look at Parrot - if you need streaming, then look at IO Play 2. Far better sound quality - although you might lose the centre speaker on the Volvo. The advantage of the IMiV is it inserts the sound into the car sound system rather than trying to jump between the stereo and speakers.surveyor said:

Tried the Grom in my S80 but the cable was minutely too long. It's designed for V70 so no issue there...I've found one fault when arming the alarm the hazards don't flash but they do when you disarm - weird one.
The hazard light flashing might be a Volvo software setting, rather than a fault.

The only thing that would concern me would be the bevel drive splines to the rear being shagged and it being fwd only- get it checked asap. If it's gone I would have thought the dealer would have to get it fixed ?

The chassis number will be YV1SZxx.....If the xx=79 it is a Euro 3 163ps, if it is 71 it is a 185 Euro 4 and if it is another number which I can't remember off hand it is the 163 Euro 4.
I must admit I can't recall them doing a 163ps Euro 4 XC so my guess it is a 185 if it is 2006 model year. It will also have a 6-speed gearbox rather than 5 if it is the later model.
