VW Golf GTI 8V 5dr Mk2 from the Bargain Classics Classifieds

I succumbed to (slightly drunk) temptation after spotting this in the "Classics for less than 5K" thread in the summer so bought it for a thousand quid. It needed rescuing from a fate of being "stanced" and "dubbed". When I got it home I found that, despite the 175,000miles, this little darling had been extremely well cared-for. No welding underneath, minimal modifications, and only a couple of faults. A new exhaust and battery too, as well as reams of old MOTs and proofs of work in the last 25 years.

The driver´s side doors and the front bumper needed painting so I got those done, together with a full machine-polish and all new badges. Then it had a complete mechanical overhaul such as cambelt, fluids flush/change, plugs/leads, etc. Finally (for now) found a cheap set of BBSs on eBay and had them refurbished as they look as if they had been stored in the bottom of a pond anderneath a pile of moving kerbstones, and fitted with new tyres. It also needed a new heater blower resistor (easy) and a new expansion tank cap (done).
Now it drives, stops and goes really nicely with no squeaks or rattles. Next job is a minor repair on the driver´s seat (tiny fag-burn and old foam) and it´s all done! Although I do seem to be accumulating Mk2 spares at a rate...

Brilliant car - my want is strong. Really tidy one local to me that constantly reminds me of the folly of getting a new polo two years back (ex insisted). Good car, lack a bit of pep being 1.4. First car was a Golf Tour (1.8 carb), loved it dearly. A GTi of some kind (pref. a MkII) is on my list.
