Jaguar X-Type 3.0 SE

Fancied a new daily driver to replace my old Civic Aerodeck, to sit alongside my 'fun' car, an MX-5 Turbo.

Owned lots of Japanese cars, always 4 cylinder thrashy things, so wanted something very different. This is my first 6 cylinder car, and my first Auto. Considered lots of options, but these looked promising. I viewed a whole bunch of them, all rusty, tatty, worn out with rubbish specs, horrid filthy beige interiors, etc. Almost gave up, but found this on Friday. Completely different to what I set out looking for being an SE not a sport, and an auto, but I'm really pleased. Crucially its a 3.0, the 2.5 felt a bit wheezy, OK with a manual but probably not with an Auto. This one goes well, engine super smooth too.

77k with a full test, matching Bridgestones, well specced (but no heated seats ). Not usually into Silver but it looks good, and stops the SE Chrome being too in your face. Nice small 16" wheels for lovely ride quality. Its smooth, comfy, quiet, and all for £1800! Should be a pleasant ride to work through the dark cold months!

I'm also considering one of these, so be interested to see how you get in with this. Ideally I'd like the estate, in Manual with heated seats. What year is this one?

Jan 2003. If your looking for an estate, I presume you must be looking to spend more than me, but based on viewing about ten of these on Thursday/Friday, I'd possibly forego 'sport' spec, as it just means big wheels, no chrome, and actually a lot less kit. And check thoroughly for rust, every single other one had serious rust issues on the body and sills. Early days, very happy with it so far though.

I had one (albeit a sport) and found it to be pretty decent. Ultimately the engine went bang but that was just bad luck.

Having also driven the ST220, i wish I'd bought one of them. Better in most respects, but the jag does have a very good 4wd system. I've driven 4x4's that couldn't handle the snow as well as the x type. The severe winter in 2010 was a doddle for the Jag.

They represent cracking value for money these days. Ford running costs (ok this engine is thirsty) but as mentioned, it goes very well. And often have many more toys than the equivalent German alternative.

I'd just like to repeat this. My father has had three of these, two of them you could put your hand through the sills. Very poor for a car of this age. Great otherwise though, and a lot of car for your money if you can find a solid one.

Done a few hundred miles now, bimbling about to work etc, averaging 28mpg! I am very pleased with that.
It demands a very relaxed driving style but the poke and the planted feel means you still motor along at a fair lick.

Bought everything for a thorough service tomorrow, oil+filter, air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter, new plugs x6, wipers, coolant top up etc, and the whole lot only comes to about £100 which is pretty good.

The rear bank of plugs is a longish job. Looks a lovely clean example.

Had my 3.0se manual for 4 years. No rust when sold in 2014. Was a 2002 well cared for. Plenty of shove, grip and very comfy. Longest I've ever kept a car. Parts mostly very cheap
