This is how she looks now I've fettled her a little. The alloys were badly corroded so have been swapped for a set of freshly refurbished gunmetal lovelies for 200 quid. A milky headlight was swapped for a mint condition unit for 80 quid. EBay turned up a momo steering wheel for 65 notes, and Gumtree a brand new unused cobra twin back box stainless exhaust to replace the original which was split and blowing for £300.
I fitted a set of new droplinks up front for £29 and replaced the front discs and pads for a princely £58 with very good oe quality from brakes international. Gumtree again for an £80 manifold which got rid of the pre- cats which break up although the studs were a bugger of a job and took my knuckles off. I did a basic service including brake fluid flush and I'm now almost ready for its first track day. I've compounded every panel and it's come up quite well.
Total cost so far is around £2700 for the car and all the bits. Really pleased how it's turned out, it's a nice little drivers car and very much fun to thrash. Not a hint of chassis rot or corrosion unlike a lot of the mx5s I looked at.
January track day here we come!

Looks good! Interested to hear how you get on on track, am considering one of these as a track/weekend car at some point!

That will be great fun on track , iv'e never tracked mine but i know it would be an excellent little car to hoon , just by the way it feels on the road.
I ended up with mine rather than actively seeking for one, but im having difficulty parting with it, im maybe in the market for another sports car (just sold a Speed 6 Tuscan) but if i get something, i'll have to sell the MR2 as we're running out of garage space.
Every time i'm ready to get something else i start to "miss" the Toyota - and for a 2k car to stop me buying much tastier stuff, it's got to be good ?.
The previous owners had done the mods on mine, different wheels (16"rear) de-cat, greenstuff air filter and twin pie s/s exhaust - the chap i bought it off never mentioned mods and i didn't really know much about them , didn't event know it had the 6 speed box until i was driving home hehe
Other than servicing and a couple of new Toyo T1-R's on the rear (got them all round) it's been totally reliable so there's been no need to spend on it only ,and as it only comes out in summer im contemplating a set of R888's and maybe a TD for 2016 biggrin

Think I'll stick to road tyres over 888s just to see how lively the backend is on track for now. It's not mega powerful but you can get it sideways out of greasy junctions even with the lsd
Fun cars pound for pound.

Nice example you will have great fun in it on track they are not the fastest thing on track due to engine power but are fairly good in the corners (better than mx5s I think which are always popular on track).
Here is my old one which I did a few track days with

Did you have any issues on standard pads and standard sump? mine is 2003 so hopefully not got ring / bore issues. Not using much if any oil at present.
I'm tempted to rip out the hood and any weight to get it under 900kg but tbh I like driving it as it is and just can't get any enthusiasm for a lot of work for a few milliseconds of track lap time.
It's reasonably quiet and enjoyable as is with soundproofing in place and hood under hardtop

I did run better brake pads and higher temp brake fluid (I think you need this on almost any car on track if you want to do more than a few laps at a time), had upgraded suspension too and aftermarket exhuast, otherwise fairly stock, I didn't need a baffled sump as only used road tyres (if running r888 or similar a baffled sump is recommend due to increased corner speeds). I only had a soft top anyway. Mine never used a drop of oil during road use and only a small amount after a full track day.
