2005 Nissan Almera
Discussion
Hi all.
I'm new to this forum. Been lurking for a while but now deciding to make a contribution.
Last week I went a bought a 2005 Nissan Almera with 77k on the clock for £800 and a full years mot. Solid as a brick, really clean and a pleasure to drive. Can't wait to start getting some proper mileage in it.
This replaces my outgoing 2008 Fiat Panda which had 62k on the clock for which I paid £2500 2 years ago for. Crap car and wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
Anyone on here had an Almera, what sort of mileage have you taken it up to.
Hopefully this proves my theory that bangernomics is the way to go when it comes to cars!

eep. I bought a 'sporty' one of these in the hope it would be ok for my wife.
In a bizarre twist of events it ended up being mine (not happy) for far too long after I sold the alfa to pay for building work.
Plus points: entertaining if somewhat unpredictable oversteer fun can be had on wet roundabouts; they sound hilarious with a big cone filter fitted.
No matter how hard I tried it WOULD NOT DIE and was insanely reliable. They're a bit of a trap because no matter how much you hate it you will never be able to justify getting rid of it. Come the nuclear apocalypse only these and cockroaches will survive.
In the end it failed its MOT on front subframe rot. It still didn't die: some bloke exported it to Africa so it could start a new life.
Luckily enough for me that got me into an XJ8 - much more my sort of thing!

It's a hoot to drive. I absolutely love it. I'm 22 and this is the first car I have had that has not been a city car.
The timing chain thing is something I'm aware of, mine sounds fine and drives like a dream. Hopefully with regular maintenance and servicing this should last the life of the car.

I put 50,000 miles on a 2000 1.8 Sport in 3 years going from Cumbria to Hull to se my OH when she was at uni. I think it only wanted an air-con condensor and a couple of wear and tear items in that time. It hardly set the world on fire but it was capable and engaging enough and did everything I ever asked of it.
Unfortunately the timing chain stretched when it got to 101,000 miles and it wasn't (financially) worth fixing.

Lots of memories made with that car.

Extreme solution.
I had a 2003 1.5 S as my first car in 2012. It had 3 doors and quite a nice gunmetal colour, I thought it was a lot nicer than the usual s
tbox corsa first cars. It took me and my gf everywhere, underwent quite heavy mileage and abuse with no servicing, and the monkeys at longleat ripped it to bits too!
The cam chain had stretched at around 50k before I bought it (I knew the 2 previous owners), was done at a cost of about a grand and apparently was due to go again as it was approaching 100k.. I bought it anyway as it was only £800. I did about 40k in it with no servicing just topping up the oil and it had a few bodged repairs for an MOT.
I actually scrapped it but tapping the reg in online shows it's still going!! I'd buy it back in a heartbeat and spend whatever it needed to keep it on the road, I loved the thing, but I think it's the memories more than anything.
I'm sure it'll serve you well!

Sorry to bump this thread back up. I have set myself the goal of keeping this car as long as I can and taking it beyond 200,000 miles.
I hope this is achievable as weirdly I have sort of fallen for this car.
Sorry but it won't happen. The timing chains are made of cheese in France by Renault. And they have not solved the problem that they stretch. So a CHAIN has become a consumable. Might as well have used a belt. I hope this is achievable as weirdly I have sort of fallen for this car.
Getting the chain change another couple of times before it reaches 200k will be expensive and tiring. I got my mother in laws fixed at mates rates and that cost over £400. The chain kit was £200 on its own.

Might not be economically sound considering the price of the thing (might as well buy another car), but if OP keeps his well maintained getting the chain replaced and keeping his well known car for that kind of money doesnt sounds like a terribly bad idea.Getting the chain change another couple of times before it reaches 200k will be expensive and tiring. Awful design of one component which lets an otherwise great car down for me.
