My Saab 9-5 Aero Estate

Picked this up last Friday and immediately put it to work ferrying me around the country,racking up 700 miles in the process. Not your typical car for a 23 year old but I wanted something a bit different!
Loving cruising round in huge amounts of comfort, the seats are brilliant and it makes mincemeat of long distances.
Enjoying the sheer amount of in-gear pace too, although it has thrown up an engine management light already, not managed to get my ebay OBD2 scanner to give me anything yet. No change in running or driving so not too concerned.
Took some pictures after giving it a good clean inside and out this weekend, think it'll need another going over it was pretty filthy.
Already got a list of things to eventually get sorted in no particular order:
Diagnose and clear the engine management light
Headlight polish
New tyres
Service
Remap
Wiper blades & mats
Refurb alloys
These cars seem well loved and looking forward to plenty of miles in it.

Nothing wrong with a Saab in your early twenties, I had a diesel 93 as my first car.
When I get rid of my 197, I'll be looking at these if there are any decent ones left. Yours looks great in that colour and on those alloys, IMO some of the nicest standard wheels around

Had mine 3 weeks so far.
1,000 Miles in and no issues yet (touch wood)
Re-map is well worthwhile, I had one from SaabNoob (Karl) so should be running 275bhp & 420nm Torque

This....If you are buying a 9-5 to keep for a long time, I'd buy a new DI cassette, fit it, and put the old one in the boot to use as a get you home spare, as it will let you down at some point.
I'd also buy a Crank Position Sensor (CPS) and put that in the boot, as at some point this will let you down as well.
At least with these two items, hwne you call out the 4th emergency service, you'll already have the required parts, other than that change oil regularly (and if an Auto change the 'sealed for life' gearbox oil as well)

Fantastic purchase OP. I have had mine for just over a year now. Also a Aero estate, but an Auto. The Auto models are a it sluggish and at times I wish I had gone for a manual.
How many miles has yours done? Mine is on a rather galactic 207k now and I bought it at 201k. The engines are pretty tough units and now becoming popular with kit car owners and Mk2 Escorts as they are quite cheap and fairly easy to get a reliable 300bhp.
Worth checking the headlamp washers work as the pumps seize. I just paid £150 for mine to be sorted for the MOT. DI Cassette is a known issue and the person who sold it probably knew about that problem
Whilst I am working in London, I shall probabaly keep mine, as its fast comfortable and because its an old fashioned boxy estate, an excellent load lugger

I saw this car on ebay myself a couple of weeks ago and very nearly went to look at it. It's done 115k miles, manual and I paid £1950. Think I overpaid compared to some others I saw for sale but compared to other cars available at that price I think it's not bad!

Nice! I too spotted this on ebay, at £2000 it isn't bad money given the relatively low miles and it being the rarer manual in a sea of autos! Plus it's the facelift bumper model. Love the colour, but never been a fan of Saab's take on beige leather, I would have been tempted with grey.

I actually really like the colour of the interior, stops it being too drab in there! Feel it works well with the black dash.
Had the local garage plug their laptop in today, the error code was related to the lambda sensor which suggests an air leak somewhere in the induction system. May be a nightmare to find but at least I know it's nothing too major. Seems to fit in with the slighly poor MPG i've been getting after the light came on. Also, when at a standstill, if you rev the engine then step off the throttle it seems to take a long time to come back down to idle. Some more investigation needed!

I had an EML with a similar problem MPG wise on my 9-3 aero, which turned out to be a split intercooler, repaired it and it disapeared. Id get the intercooler out and pressure test it if you get chance Had the local garage plug their laptop in today, the error code was related to the lambda sensor which suggests an air leak somewhere in the induction system. May be a nightmare to find but at least I know it's nothing too major. Seems to fit in with the slighly poor MPG i've been getting after the light came on. I had some idle issues and it was a bust pipe connector. I will attempt to describe where it was but no promises you will understand lol.
Pipe comes from the drivers side of the bulkhead and threads along side the throttle body then 't's off, it was that bit was broken, cost £32 as you have to buy the whole lot. As well as a crap description i have posted a crap picture just to confuse you even more.

The list of minor issues is slowly growing as I drive the car more, definitely viewing this car as a rolling restoration as none of the issues are particularly big, just a long list of niggles.
Cruise control does not work, could be a result of EML
Rear washer not functioning, hopefully just some crud in the pipe
Electric mirror adjustment non functioning on passenger side, and auto fold also not working on passenger side
Odd vibration through brake pedal at very slow speeds, not existent at anything above 10mph.
Hopefully I'll eventually get it all sorted!

SAAB fixed that problem on the 2004-2005 MY 9-5s by revising the whole PVC breather system.Edited by littlebasher on Monday 22 February 09:58
OPs car is one of these so in theory all should be well.
