Looked out the window this morning and its still there. Not sure if this is a good thing...



It has a horrid vibration from the prop (?) at 35 to 40mph, so I just ordered a second hand one rear half with centre bearing.

S1. 2.8 auto. 54k miles which I think is correct. Originally light green. £2k. £19 on the train and a very scary (frankly terrifying) ride in a LHD 911 SC across Dartmoor.

Headlining shot. Carpets manky. One arch needs repair. Propshaft centre bearing shot (I think). Has LPG. ONly one tank working. No AED fitted, so only starts on gas. Broken bonnet cable. Rusty bonnet. Brake warning light on. PAS belt slipping.

Other than that, its lovely!

I've got to dig my Fathers Series 2 Daimler Sovereign out of the garage. It has sat there for 16 years since he died, I've started it occasionally and it is dry, so it won't be too hard to recommission. I know the engine is spot on, and the bodywork is sound. On the + side it is tax free (1974), the downside will be 4.2 litres of thirst and the mighty twin tanks. I remember spending £100 filling the damn thing up about 18 years ago....

Ah. My grandfather's Daimler was being auctioned by its last owner this weekend so I thought you might have bought that one.

Lovely, another 2.8 breaks cover! Its foibles don't sound too intimidating, if you can hang a RR block from the roof I'm sure you'll soon sort the Daimler out.

Firstly, its lush to drive! Clearly a well sorted 4.2 would be a fine thing.

Secondly, I tried to fill the gas tank, there seems to be a leak, gas pissing out all over the floor when trying to plug the bayonet on, fearful of an incident that would require David Cameron to convene Cobra, I beat a hasty retreat. (I'm not entirely sure if I should have gone into the shop to pay, so I may have inadvertently stolen some gas, although, I left it there...)

Its been in the garage today, a used rear prop and centre bearing from a Jag breaker for £90 has solved the vibration that was threatening my internal organs. I'll get the old one rebuilt.

A new PAS belt, £9, has got the steering working at idle...handy when parking.

Its now kind of driveable.

Next job is the carbs with manual choke, then I can pull out the life threatening gas kit.

Wow a set of genuine Wolfies. That would certainly add a more aggressive look, but I think these cars look better with more restrained wheels

I resisted the temptation to buy the Woolfies. That in itself is unusual behaviour by me.

A pair of manual choke carbs arrived in the post. Have ordered a choke cable.

I have assembled manual choke carbs, gaskets and a single choke cable, booked in for next week to get it all fitted. It will do with the single choke cable for a while, I'll fit a twin one when I have it.

Car just returned from the 'mechanical man servant'.

A new dizzy with electronic ignition from powerspark, new leads, new plugs and new coil.

A pair of manual choke carbs from a Rover P6 (its not an easy swap at all!) and a new air filter.

Feels like twice the power, shows how it really was struggling. LPG kit now empty and partially removed.

I've done a few hundred miles in it.Round town its doing 20.6mpg! Honestly! I was expecting 15.

Not using any oil or coolant.

Now has a choke cable fitted to one carb, first thing this morning it started instantly, no longer any need the dramatic performance of taking ten attempts to start with no choke.

The LPG kit is gone, now need a spare wheel rim, or a set of Wolfies.....

I like big wafty comfy cars and it is simply excellent. I amazed at how good it is, the 2.8 is shorter stroke than the 4.2 and has a shorter diff, its surprisingly nippy.

All in all, a positive update, doubltess it'll breakdown soon....

Done nearly 1000 miles in it now and like it very much, really is one of the best driving cars I've had.

Seems to be holding together!
