1989 Peugeot 205 project!

So to set the scene I have been lurking these forums for a good 6 months and I thought now was the time to show my face

First to set the scene! I'm 16 and recently have been thinking about what my first car should be and after getting rid of my project car I felt I needed something else in my life. So off I went looking for a retro classic project that I would hopefully be able to insure at a half reasonable price at the age of 17. After looking for three weeks I found the perfect car... a 1989 1.4 Peugeot 205 GR!

It was perfect! 2 owners from new, 70 odd thousand miles a folder stacked of history including insurance coverage and literally no rust all for the grand sum of £325! Granted it has its issues such as only a couple weeks MOT, door winder being broken and the engine just generally being a bit dribbly everywhere and the 80 mile trip each way.

So today we made the trip to pick up the car and we were not dissapointed! it was the most honest looking car I have seen and cruised like a trooper all the way home on a mix of hilly a and b roads. I couldn't be any happier with it right now! now comes the fun part of pulling it apart and fixing it. I will keep posting updates as and when I get things done.

We had a G-reg 1.1 Style for seven years until recently - £100 when we got it from the first owners from new, and 170k when we sold it (to somebody who was going to use it as a daily).

Great fun to drive, plenty of feedback to tell you what you're doing right - and wrong. A great little car to learn to properly drive in at speeds that won't land you in court or hospital. Tough as old boots, too, and very easy to spanner on. They don't even rot much - just keep an eye on the inner wing seams at the sides of the engine bay. Rear suspension arm bearings go, but a rebuilt rear beam's not expensive or hard to fit.

Excellent 1st car although I imagine insurance will still be a killer, despite that I'm going to suggest some S2 Rallye steels with decent tyres and a slight altitude adjustment and you'll have an excellent back road blaster.

Good choice. Exactly the sort of car I chose when learning how to drive and fix cars! 17 years later and I finally own the GTI version I always wanted back then

The 1.4 is a great little engine in the 205 plus a lot of bits from the sportier models just bolt in depending on how easy going your insurance company is (wheels, seats, interior, bumpers, suspension, brakes etc). If you need any bits (eg window winder) let me know as i've got a load of odds and ends stashed away in the garage)

I will thank you guys now for all the positive responses towards this project because at first I really wasn't sure.

So this evening after work I decided to have a look over the car once again and also had a little drive seeing as I cant keep my eyes off it anyway. After closer inspection I see I have a nice couple of jobs I could tackle tomorrow on my day off. These include changing what looks to be a gasket in the carburetor and giving the engine bay a general tidy up seeing it has an oil leak.

And yeah the plate just makes it haha!

If you have a compressor, or can lay your hands on one, I can mix you up and post you some bumper coloured pigment, with a plastic primer I have in my possession. Just say a tenner for the cost of pigments and post. Would make them as good as new.

Just a quick question; if you're 16 how come you're driving it home? Do you have any disability allowing you a 16 year olds licence, or chanced it unlicensed? If the latter I'd blank your plates, some coppers will read PH too!

I wasnt driving it home yesterday! It's because I was using the selfie camera which mirrors everything like an actual mirror haha
