New car, not very Pistonheads, but happy

To replace the sheddy old 03 Laguna. My earlier post wasn't an ad, but unfortunately contained enough particulars for it to possibly be deemed so!

60mpg instead of 31 appeals, and whilst not exciting I took it out for a spin earlier and it pulls really well, and it has every toy imaginable.

The Cat D bit.... firstly, anything else on sale of it's ilk today is £13.5k - £14.5k. This one we've bought has never had an accident, it was heavily vandalised in March. The glass, a headlight and the bumper were all put through with a hammer, and it had a keying. All repaired perfectly to my eyes. I feel like we robbed him - we shook on £10,450 for what is a 1 year old 26k miles car, that cost £27,000 19 months ago.

Sarah's happy, it's for her really, as she does plenty on the motorway.

Surely those autotrader stats are wrong? How could a torquey, modern car with 161 bhp take over 10 seconds to do 0-60?

I figured out what it is! I had been doing research into how older plates were registered (trying to trace history on my own car); the current 'E' plates are typically registered in Chelmsford, as was my car on the pre-2001 style plates. Scrolling straight down Wikipedia it seems I'd have seen both bits of information, so I'm guessing that's the connection I made.

Hopefully didn't cause you any alarm (the price you paid might have been robbery but not that sort )

I'm not sure. Compared to the (118bhp) Laguna it does feel very sprightly, pulls away quickly. I'd say 10 seconds feels on the high side?

We're now toying with the idea of giving Sarah's mum and dad the Laguna. We'd only see £800 for it, and we've spent more than that on it in the last six months. It seems too good to flog for that, and as he only has his Merc builders van it could be used to run it to death for 3-4 years.

There was a thread about the Autotrader figures a day or two ago. I think the opinion was that they can be a little inaccurate.
Parkers has the Elite Tourer doing around 9.3/9.6 secs 0-60.
Having said that, not sure what car the OP has - Autotrader says it's 161bhp, Parkers seem to have 160bhp and 163 bhp cars among others, but not 161bhp.

drove one of the smaller diesels the other day and it has some awesome gearing - really pulled hard in 2nd and 3rd so i can see 0-60 times would be good

i love the second set of lights in the boot are. genius or bad initial design - who knows great solution though

Lovely cars. Had one for work a while back and served me very well indeed.

One note however; the claimed 60MPG is optimistic. I never saw higher than 42 with an average of 38-40 normally.

I was going to suggest something similar. It takes a certain amount of energy to move the car, and engines didn't get that much more efficient. Long journeys at 70 I'd bet on 50mpg.

Time shall tell. I appreciate that is the top end of claims by Vauxhall, and I wouldn't stand a chance of seeing it. Sarah on the other hand isn't a particularly fast driver, she's happy gently cruising on the motorway at 70.
Whatever the case, it shall be a great improvement. The trip on the Laguna rigidly stuck at 31mpg average, driving it home from Dudley to Notts last night (80 miles?) saw the fuel gauge barely move.

I hired the saloon (hatchback?) version of this for a drive to cornwall recently and I was very impressed. Not the most exciting but perfect for putting up big miles. If I regularly did lots of miles I would definitely consider one. The only problem with the one I had was a faulty TPMS.

Also that is some painful depreciation for the first owner.

MPG wise my 2.0 CDTI GTC gets about 38-40mpg average commuting, but it's a hell of a lot better on a long run where around 60mpg is possible.

One word of warning, just be careful with the gearbox. They do not like remotely quick gear changes especially 1st - 2nd.

Yeah mines a manual, I had a problem with crunching 1st - 2nd. I hold my hands up and admit it was my fault but I just struggled to get used to having to be so slow and gentle with it, I think it's a combination of the engine being turbo'd and a diesel so the revs don't drop quite as fast as a petrol engine, so I've had to learn to be a lot more patient with it!
