Back in 2014 I got my degree and got a job, so decided to replace my previous car ( http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... ). The apple can't fall far from the tree, so I ended up with a 2011 Peugeot 308 GTi (aka GT200).

It's got the 200hp 1.6 turbo, the differences from the other turbocharged Prince engines being that it's got dual VVT+L, a larger front mount intercooler, different exhaust and a larger turbo with different port arrangement. In addition, the car gets bigger front brakes (340mm diameter, still single piston caliper unfortunately), shorter gear ratios, some suspension tweaks, a roof spoiler in the back and different bumbper/exhaust arrangement.

Don't expect huge amounts of PH love, but I like to document what I do it...

In the meantime, drove my mate to a Honda dealership to pick his new (to him) Type R. Legendary Honda reliability resulted in this being the first picture we have of his pride, which understandably has been the basis for much banter:

As an ex-205 gti owner I'm not really a fan of Peugeots newer stuff, but this pic:



Does make the Pug look nice. Would be better in a 3-door though I think.

What is the engine/power? 1.6 turbo ~200bhp?

Is it remappable?

Congrats anyway, looks like a decent buy.

Aren't they basically same engine as in the Mini Cooper?

You should be able to get good gains on them using 99 Octane and some breathing and exhaust mods.

From the picture of the coil pack, it looks like the N18 Prince engine, so its circa 250bhp with a remap.

Yeap, 1.6T with 200HP. Remap and exhaust should give it circa 250HP.

It's got a bit of an arch gap, yes. laugh But it's quite compliant. My experience with Eibach -3cm springs isn't the best, I had them fitted on my 307 (accompanied by a bit firmer shocks from the CC version, which were around 3cm shorter as well) and handling-wise the progressive rate of them didn't offer much improvement.

For example, in this picture:


it still leans significantly. I suppose you can't expect miracles and they aren't that much stiffer...

Frosty...


Anyway, some versions of the early 308s (GT trim level) had a colour mfd on the IP. These screens were similar to the ones used in the 607s, the high spec 407s and 407 Coupes. After much searching, I managed to source one from a 407. Using Peugeot's diagnostic tool, I configured it to my vehicle's specs and lo and behold:




However, my mwstewart-ism smile was not entirely successful; even though basic functionality was there, certain features didn't work properly or were not as polished. This was attributed to different software levels. For example, I couldn't get bluetooth streaming to work (weird that the functionality goes through the screen as well) or the parking aid graphics were single colour only. As a result, after looking for one at breakers' yards etc, I managed to source a new old-stock module for the 308s. I swapped them over and sold the 407 one on ebay to some gent from Bulgaria.

Around that time I replaced the spark plugs, even though they weren't really that bad.

Really like that, I always thought the 308 was a good looking car in the sportier trims, never knew there was a GTI though!

Kinda makes me want one!

Only ever seen One of these in the flesh, quite a smart, subtle looking Hatch IMO. XSi spec was about the Sportiest the 307 got wasn't it?

Prefacelift 307s' range topper was the XSi with the 2 litre petrol (circa 138hp), but the facelift brought the 2 litre EW10J4S with 180 hp in "Feline" spec.

Well under the radar this one, could be considered a bit of a sleeper?

Looks really well specified too, only two on AutoTrader and neither have xenons which it looks like yours does?

More of a q-car I suppose, the twin exhaust, the badges, the spoiler and the stickers don't disguise it... I've been thinking about making it more stealthy, but PSA don't do any large diameter steelies that would clear the discs/calipers I think.

Right, on to another small change...

308s had 3 types of clusters.
The first one was on base-spec vehicles and had a black background and no trip computer display, like so:


The level 2 one (the one that my car had) has white dials and a small trip computer display:


The level 3 one, after doing some research, was only fitted on vehicles that had the NG4 navigation system and had a large dot matrix display between the dials:


I tried to find a level 3 unit, but it had such a low mix rate that it proved practiaclly impossible. While looking at RCZs, I realised that some of them had the large mfd even though they weren't equipped with a navigation system. The RCZ is based on the 308 so the electrical architecture is common. Engines etc are common, so in theory at least a unit from an RCZ should have been compatible with my vehicle. So, after some late-night ebay searches, I managed to track an RCZ cluster from a petrol vehicle, which had the large display.


Happy as a bunny, upon receiving the package I set off to fit it to my car. However, the french, being french, decided to run the display independently from the rest of the cluster; this necessitated a standalone connection on the back of it, which wasn't shown on any of the parts catalogs I had access to.


Popping down to my car, I couldn't find any additional branches with a parked connector that would fit, even though PSA hasn't moved to specing looms to cars depending on the equipment fitted. Case in point, my IP harness has the GPS antenna loom and connector, albeit taped up and parked. No harm done thought, that just means that the project has evolved slightly to match my day job. laugh

Digging up the RCZ schematics then, I managed to get some more info on the phantom connector:


The BSI is circled in red, while the cluster is in blue; the matrix mfd is in green. In yellow I've circled a few buttons that NG4-equipped 308s/RCZs have on the centre console; the NG4 doesn't support vehicle menu settings, so the manufacturer has fitted these hardwired (resistive ladder) buttons that are not connected to the rest of the systems, as they are directly wired into the mfd. I had checked the vehicle specs of the RCZ that the cluster came from, and it didn't have the buttons at all; therefore, it was easy to understood that they are not required for the operation of the display.

On the drawing, the cluster is connected to the BSI: a 12v power feed, a ground feed and a CANbus connection. The latter branches into several sections before ending up at the cluster. The CANbus connection is just a twisted pair. The MFD has the same 4 basic connections and is on the same CANbus as the cluster.

Being keen on macgyverisms, I used an oscilloscope to determine the CAN high and CAN low pins and made a diy connector and jumper harness:


Red for the +12v feed, black for the ground, yellow for CAN_H and blue for CAN_L



I tried to source an OEM connector (a TE one) but didn't get very far, so ended up making it myself using some leftover headers for arduino boards, which I cut and glued appropriately.

Didn't even know these existed! Looks a fairly smart car, and the mod's your doing look like great additions to add to the experience. Must be quite rapid should you take it to 250hp?
Is this the same engine as 208 gti, in which case that too can hit 250hp?

As a huge fan of the whole OEM+ Scene, I'am loving what you are doing. When i had my Mk5 Fiesta ZS years ago, i retro-fitted all the little extras the Ghia had, it's so satisfying.

Loving the enthusiasm for the OEM upgrades. Apart from that, I can't see the appeal of these cars at all. I grew up loving French hot hatches, I had 4 different 306s! But the 307 and the Mk1 308 were a big soft step backwards.

If you ever get the opportunity to drive an older Pug hot hatch (one which they weren't too ashamed to apply an "i" to the back of wink ) then I think you'll be able to see why this model got panned by the journalists at the time.
