Well after missing my old mk2 gti 16v for so long i have been wanting another for a while now and since the Ford Kuga has sold recently i thought i would start looking.

My previous mk2 was pretty mint and i used it as a daily but this time this is purely a long term project to keep for a very long time, i'm not planning on making this one a concourse show car or anything but to tidy it up and make it as tidy as possible.

So the car.....

1990 H reg 158k 4 previous owners

Royal Blue 5 door 16v

Folder of history and stamped service book up until December 2007 when it was taken off the road.

I bought it from a guy in Preston a couple of weekends ago and he transported it back to Sheffield for me as part of the deal.

It is spares or repairs obviously as its been off the road since 2007 and doesnt run as it stands but has in the last 18 months until a problem came up with the fuel pump and has not been touched since.

The long term plan is to tidy the car up and refurb everything as i go.

Anyway for now here's afew pics from collecting it........

well worth saving. it doesn't look to be in that bad condition considering it has been sat for a while. keep it standard though and put some BBS RA's back on it.

I spoke to the guy i bought the car off as i realised when looking under the car that the fuel pump housing was missing, the plastic housing holds the fuel pump, fuel pressure accumulator and fuel filter, turns out it was in his garage so has sent it me in the post so when it arrives i will fit it up and get some fresh petrol see if it will fire.

Bodywork wise it doesnt look too bad,all the usual mk2 rust areas seem to be rust free, scuttle, fuel filler ect.

Interior is ok, drivers seat is torn but all others are good, fuse box has been messed with so need to check that, headlining has come away badly at the back so that will need replacing.

It does have the cassette holder in the front console which is quite rare i think and it has upgraded kenwood speakers front and rear in the original places so no nasty holes in the parcel shelf !

When speaking to the guy before i bought the car he thought it might have been tuned at some point with an uprated cam shaft there is a label on the front slam panel intrapro engineering ? There is a rolling road printout in the service history showing its output at 150bhp which is 11bhp above standard.

Will update more when the fuel pump assembly turns up.

Nice project.
Is that Helios blue?
I had a few of these in the 90's they were great to drive and the PAS made them much better to drive than the older non Power steerting models.

I love MK2 Golfs, had several, would love to try one again, think a 20 VT model would hit the spot these days quite nicely.

The car looks to be in fundamentally good condition. It will take a bit of time and effort, but you'll have lovely old car here.

The fuel pump housing arrived in the post today so been In the garage and fitted it all up along with some fresh petrol and.........

She's alive !!!!!!!!

Couldnt believe it, cranked it for a while until the fuel came through then with a blip of the throttle it spluttered into life. When checking everything while it was ticking over I realised that one of the metal fuel pipes that goes from the filter to the pressure accumulator had 3 pin holes in it so was misting fuel everywhere but other than that it seemed fine.

I will get the replacement pipe ordered and service parts as well next I think.

All in all a very happy boy tonight !!
