924S Road / Track car
Discussion
Thought I'd post up some pics of my current work in progress. I've owned the car for 2 years and set out from the beginning to turn the 924S into a more focussed road car with a Clubsport / Track bias.
They aren't fast cars by modern standards but they do handle very well indeed so I have slowly been mechanically and cosmetically sorting it out for the past 24 months. I am a bit of a clean freak so the engine bay was given a damn good thrashing to turn 30 years of it never being touched to something more presentable. Overall the 924's are superbly put together and stand up to time incredibly well, fuel lines have been replaced along with various hoses but engine wise the car runs very sweetly. I've got loads of pictures from the whole journey however essentially the aim has been to turn into a car I can drive on the road with track biased mechanicals.
So far it's been fully polybushed had the rear beam reindexed and lowered on the rear eccentrics, it sits on Gaz adjustable dampers with adjustable front camber plates, new hand brake shoes and cables, new OE discs with Carbone Lorraine RC5 race pads, race brake fluid and an overhaul of the stock calipers. All the nuts and bolts have been replaced with new ones from Porsche. It has a free flowing exhaust, a Promax chip and K&N filter to go on.
Interior wise I fabricated some RS style door cards myself and retrimed the tired headliner in alcantara, the wheel has been swapped out for a Momo with a B&G quick release hub as the 924S are known for having the wheel sitting on your legs so the extra 60mm sorts this problem out. The rear seats have been ditched and I have retrimed the void, all seat belts have now gone and been replaced with 6 point Willans harnesses along with a pair of Corbeau race seats though I'll be fitting a winged seat in the next few months for the drivers side. All the sound deadening has been removed along with the stereo, speakers, rear wiper motor ( now has a 968CS wiper delete bung), it has a Safety devices roll cage with is being reworked with a harness bar and new x brace in the main hoop. I am also in the middle of fitting a full Spa plumed in Fire surpression system with two nozzles in the engine bay and one in the cabin aimed on my feet along with an FIA master switch and interior/exterior safety pulls.
Bodywork wise the car was very good, I caught some areas just in time, the only place that did need work was the inner front wing which has had new metal as has the lower front wing, the rear spoiler gas gone in place of a 944 bridge spoiler, the sides and bumpers have had all the rubbers removed.
Wheels and tyres, it came to me with a staggered set of teledials which are a classic looking wheel but I was struggling to find staggered tyres in 15" that would work well on track so I've sourced a set of D90's which have now been refurbished in Ford graphite and have Yokohama AD08R rubber to go on, 205 50 16 on the front and 225 45 16 on the rear to give the same rolling radius all round.
The car is currently at a race car builders having the cage and exhaust fettled and will go back to be correctly set up and corner weighted once I'm ready.
Most of all whilst not having endless amounts of disposable I have been doing as much of the work myself with the help of a very good friend and along the way over the past two years it's been great fun doing what we all like best, tinkering with cars.

Bit more of an update, the cage is now fully finished and after deciding that removing it to paint it wasn't going to work I ended up masking off the inside of the car and painted it in situ.
The carpets and rest of the interior are mostly back together too with a few bit to finish off so I've been routing the external pull handles and starting to plumb in the extinguisher.
The new belts have arrived, the D90's are back from being painted again as I wasn't happy with the finish and I've got a new Corbeau Revolution Carbon seat on its way.
