So this week I've had a hire car all week while working on Essex ... it was a C4 Cactus hired through GreenMotion based at Holiday Inn M4 J4 (Heathrow) for the princely sum of £3.21 per day!!
I didn't expect much but have actually come to really like it, ok it's not fast or sexy but eats the miles and I've never driven anything as economical ever ... I couldn't get the mpg under 70.5 the whole time I had it no matter what driving style!
The only thing I couldn't get away with was the binnacle as there are no gauges at all, no rev counter (digital or otherwise) just a purely digital speedo, and the all touchscreen interface for radio/nav/phone/heating etc...
I've done about 600miles in it across London and Essex this week and I would actually consider one if I needed a car to bump around in cities and car parks!

We have one of these which we got under a cheap lease deal last year.
It's my wife's car and it was bought as a spreadsheet purchase for her to use to travel to work, shopping, ferry kids around etc.
She loves it. We have the 3 cylinder petrol and whilst slow it suits her needs perfectly. Well specced (sat nav, reversing camera, climate, cruise, bluetooth etc.) it's been a great run about.
I've used it for a few 250 mile journeys and it's surprisingly comfortable - you need to maintain momentum as the lack of power at motorway speeds is slightly annoying (think changing down on steep hills). One minor problem with wind noise due to the seals on the doors but fixed under warranty with no issues.
On a 15k mile per year lease (for a total of 18 months) we paid a £700 deposit and pay £123 a month. Fantastically cheap motoring although I wouldn't have wanted to buy one new as I expect depreciation would be horrific.

Mrs Husband is on her second on a lease deal. She adores the thing. 1.6 Blue Hdi with fancy wheels and panoramic sunroof. She averages 58 mpg's with her mixed driving but I've had 75mpg's out of it in hyper-miling mode on the M-Way. The diesel is a punchy little unit in a car that is only just north of 1000kg's and it handles remarkably well down the lanes of North Wales.
My wife got one of these about 6 weeks ago. We got the 1.2 petrol (3 cylinder turbo) and I have to say I quite like it. We did a 900 mile road trip in it over Easter, across the Peaks, Snowdonia and Brecon Becons and couldn't fault it. Swallowed up all the luggage, drove faultlessly, nice and comfortable and did 46mpg (despite my heavy right foot). And the engine puts a smile on your face - bit of a cheeky noise and enough grunt make progress. As OP says, it's just lacking in gauges! Pic from our travels across Wales:
