Just bought a Defender 110 TD5 12 seat station wagon

Hi all,
After years of nearly managing it I've finally bought myself a Defender.
We moved to Wiltshire a couple of years ago and started seeing Byway signs everywhere and thought it was a waste not having a 4x4.
The car is a 1999 TD5 110 just approaching 170k miles.
She's quite tidy looking, rear doors are rotten, some patches of surface corrosion on some of the body panels and almost no lacquer on the roof.
It's pretty immaculate inside too and the air conditioning blows strong and cold
Digging through the service history the following work has been done in the last 3 years (service and cosmetic stuff apart):
- replacement of braking system including disks, pads, ABS pump, relay and lines
- new exhaust manifold
- new steering box and linkages
- new clutch and master cylinder
- rear UJ
- new half-shafts
I was quite impressed on the test drive with the level of grunt - previous experience of Land Rover was in a S3 2.25 petrol. I'd read how the TD5s were pretty slow in standard form, so although the current seller wasn't aware of it wasn't a surprise to find that it has had a JE Engineering Stage 1 tune.
All in all I'm pretty pleased with the purchase.

Very nice, looks very tidy for the age and miles. My old man has a 1999 130 Australian import which looks like it's approaching death by comparison to yours! (He also had my old 90 but rolled it over two weeks ago, the silly bugger)
I love the TD5 because IIRC it was the last engine designed and built in-house by Land Rover. There are some common problems but with 170k yours is probably safe from the stupid ones (like oil pump bolts rattling loose and destroying the engine!)

A lot of them leak from the door (even when new!) so it might take a bit of fiddling to get that to stop, but worth a go.
Yours looks pretty tidy compare to my FIL's 2004 car, which is in desperate need of a cosmetic makeover, but mechanically is perfectly fine.
Kids love a car they can climb on :-) (gratuitous pick of my v8 110 from a few years ago).
