My D2 A8 2.8 V6 Quattro
Discussion
Evening all,
I've had a B5 A4 1.8T Avant, a C5 Allroad 2.7T and a B7 A4 3.2 Avant, so for the longest time I've been into petrol wagons.
Yesterday I picked up this beauty (advert photo):

It's a 2002 2.8 Quattro Sport, and came with:
- 20" alloy wheels
- Sunroof
- Black Recaro interior
- Bose audio
- Halogen lights
- Individual paint colour (aqua blue)
- Tiptronic 5sp with steering wheel control
- Vavona wood trim (proper chap spec)
All this for £2k - unbelievable amount of car for the money. It's uber comfortable, even with the huge wheels, and somehow managed 32mpg on the way back to SW London from Birmingham!
I gave it a clay and a wax today, the colour really pops in the sunlight, flips from dark blue to light purple
[url]

I need to give the engine bay, boot and interior a good going over, but it's reassuring to know under the grime is a pretty lovely bit of well assembled kit.
It has advisories for an oil leak (rocker covers I believe) and some suspension rubber deterioration so I plan to rectify these points first.
Mid-term plans:
- New disks and pads
- Alloy wheel refurb
- Stainless backbox /cat-back
- Fit Alpine x305 iPod headunit
There are also a couple of marks, one on the rear bumper and a bit of bubbling on the drivers door edge which I will get sorted asap. Will also treat the black and chrome trims to bring them back to their former lustre.
Otherwise, I'm really pleased with this barge, proper gentleman's cruiser!
I may have questions as I progress, and I welcome any comments / feedback

Lovely, always had a soft spot for A8 petrols. How is the 2.8? Does it shift the bulk ok?
Any interior pics?
It's a wonderful thing, really well built. I was quite surprised by both the pace and the sound to be honest, I've had much more powerful V6 lumps in very different cars but this is more than adequate as a wafter. Not quick by any means, but no slouch. Any interior pics?

looks good.
I didn't know that - she's right though, obviously looks good.

I used to have a 4.2 V8 one of these in silver. The novelty of the rear electric blind never wore off! It was exported when I sold it.
I wish I could have justified a V8 version, truthfully I've got lots of 2.7TT bits I want to bolt to a recon lump so I may drop an S4 engine in this if the original ever decides to cop it. That'd be an interesting proposition I'm sure!Mine doesn't have the blinds I'm afraid, but I'm not too bothered and by far my favourite feature is the double armrests!

So my A8 ownership hadn't been gone a week - and I started noticing some issues.
Late june after a 2 week holiday I took it on it's maiden voyage, did around 20 miles and parked up to do some shopping. When I returned to the car some hours later and started it, the engine check light was on. Later that day I ran a code scan and the following faults were found:
16814: Catalyst System Efficiency (Bank 2) Below Limit P0430
16804: Catalyst System Bank 1 Operation below threshold P0420
On top of this, when driving between around 1-2k rpm, I got an intermittent shudder which felt almost like a misfire pocket in the rev-range. There was also a bit of rev fluctuation during normal driving situations, in which I could visibly see the rev needle drop down 100 or so when applying pressure to the throttle. I was immediately concerned it was transmission related, but could equally be coilpacks / sparks.
Codes reset but reappeared a day or two later. Called up my friend at TuningWerkes to try and diagnose the issue, which we put down to oil ingress after I did a snoop around with a torch and a pump and found an unreal amount of the stuff in with every spark plug. Not good! There was also sealant around the nearside bank gasket suggesting a poor repair in the past - wish I'd pulled the covers off during inspection!
The car has been at said garage for nearly a week now, I'm due to pick it up later but this notable image suggests the bulk of the problem:

The following was done:
- New spark plugs
- New leads
- New cam cover gaskets
- New seals as required
- Good old clean up
- Crankcase ventilation hoses replaced
- K&N panel filter fitted
- Fresh oil and filter
- Coolant flush
among other things such as an auxiliary belt replacement due to surface cracking. I cannot tell you how excited I am to be picking the old girl up later - fingers crossed it runs like a dream now with no trouble.
Next on the list is sourcing a replacement exhaust from the catalytic converter back - the original is still on and showing it's 107k miles badly now.
I'll update this threat soon, hopefully with some good news!

It is but I had a bit of cash saved from a previous car sale so I consider it a worthwhile expense - under my ownership I will slowly overhaul anything that needs attention (within reason) and keep it as it should be.
t always a bummer when this happens hope it sorts it out. The good news is I have had it back this afternoon and all the issues appear to have been rectified - it drives like a dream now! Lots of necessary work done which shouldn't need doing again any time soon

Yay! Some gratuitous pictures since I'm really happy to have the barge home and running beautifully!

The difference between picture one (pre-detailing) and the second (after you showed the paint some love) is startling. I had to check the numberplate was the same, as I thought the pictures were of two different cars!

I must say it really does scrub up well for a 15 year old car - my Allroad did the same, I think it could be to do with the aluminium body to an extent. Will be giving it more treatment in the coming weeks but I'm really pleased with how the paintwork comes up

Ah yes, the good old aluminium body of old A8s. No frilly arches like Merc E & S Classes of the same vintage.

Having owned one myself previously. The cats are known to give the failure message early. Mine had it like that for over a year. The rocker cover gaskets are a right nightmare, mine were constantly dripping on the exhaust manifold and causing a massive smoke screen behind the car.
I found that the rocker covers have warped and never sealed correctly unless a bit of sealant was applied.
Good luck though man

Car looks great OP! In terms of the exhaust, I had a custom stainless item made for my Merc R129 by my local Powerflow dealer. Looks just like the original item (athough it doesn't have to) and was around half the price of OEM.
Happy motoring!
I contacted Powerflow and they advised the cat-back plus flexi will be around £1k - a bit too much for me and I think a pretty expensive option. I'm seeing a company called Mr Exhaust next week for an inspection in the hope they can build me something cheaper. Watch this space!Happy motoring!

Every Audi I've had required gasket replacement, the older models (no experience of newer ones) love to leak oil! I've had the same problem of oil leaking onto hot components causing smoke and smells, it's a royal pain. I've spent good money on genuine Audi parts so the hope is they do the job for a couple of years, so far so good but inevitably the problem will return. As for the cats, I'm seeing a specialist next week to spec up a fresh system so we'll see what the damage is.
Either way, I still adore the thing for it's sheer comfort and presence!
Little update - finally got round to swapping out the stock Symphony II system for a Pioneer SPH-DA120 Appradio unit:

It's really well put together, lots of functionality and does everything I need it to, namely connect my iPod and allow hardwired or bluetooth connection for calls and messages. Also has Apple maps and other apps available so it's a very handy and almost factory looking upgrade (especially with the splash screen image changed to the Audi logo).
There is no fascia for D2s so I had to trim an A6 one to make this fit. Was a chore but well worth the outcome.
I've been pondering the direction for this car and it does need a few things done before I'm happy, so the next steps include:
- Full suspension refresh; top mounts, bushes, arms (front and rear)
- Cat-back exhaust - looking into having a system built to get around the EML and converter issues
- Subwoofer install
- Rear view camera (Pioneer unit which works with the head unit) to make up for the lack of parking sensors
- Air suspension; either an off the shelf kit or a retrofit from another Audi
- Alloy wheel refurbishment
- Front and rear bumper respray
Long term plans include an engine swap if the current lump dies a death. I have already been looking into C5 RS6 lumps and also 2.7T options since this car is already equipped with a V6. All a long way off but would be quite the build!

come on any engine swap has to be a v12...
Good it is working out they look solid beasts. What is the mpg like?
Sacrilegious perhaps, but I want a V8 before a V12. That said, anything with a BiTurbo from Audi will be considered! I want to go as 'OEM+' as possible, hence keeping original wheels on, improving original paint, adding to the original interior as tastefully as possible etc.Good it is working out they look solid beasts. MPG is surprising - it'll achieve between 32-38 on a longer run, and easily 25-30 in town (I've tested this multiple times). Have achieved higher, and much much lower in some cases!
A truly magnificent thing to be in and around, although being such a solid and heavy thing the factory suspension components are feeling their age now.

Even with 5 people in the car i did 32.9mpg over the whole trip, which considering the size, quattro and engine size is VERY resonable

It's hands down the most comfortable car I've been in - those front seats are literally arm chairs. Agreed on the consumption of these things, the 2.8 isn't built for breakneck speed so if used lightly and sparingly you really can achieve impressive range / mpg.Even with 5 people in the car i did 32.9mpg over the whole trip, which considering the size, quattro and engine size is VERY resonable
